This is an excellent book for people who want to learn real statistical mechanics, with other background such like chemistry. The point is, it is not a book just tell you something like "Partition function for M-B distribution is p=sum(exp(-E/kT))", indeed it explained why it is, how to get it from classical mechanics, which explained in the first chapter; this is an important point since many chem students like me did not learn classical mechanics systematically in undergrad. More, it also approached the theory using path-integral theories, which is not so common seen in many other stat-books, i.e. books from Pathria and Huang. This is a very interesting topic and has been used widely these days.
I like this textbook because a) it is modern, and includes many advanced sampling techniques (like metadynamics, to simulate rare events), b) introduces molecular dynamics through classical dynamics (previously, students had to read a separate set of books -- e.g., Greenwood -- to make this connection). Good mix of derivation and explanation.The book by Haile is also a good conceptual introduction to MD simulation, but perhaps intentionally not as rigorous as what's presented here (there's more of an emphasis on the underlying statmech in this book). Frenkel and Smit is also good but is more devoted towards MC; it's a good companion to this book if the reader is interested in the MC side of molecular simulation (includes conformational sampling, for instance).
This book cover all issues needed to undertanding molecular dynamics in a deep way. The treatment of equations and problems are special and the stundent are faced with exercises that challenge the capability of work with statements and definitons. After all, this is a great book.
This is finally a book which not just nicely introduces the StatMech, but has a remarkable connection to the "real world" of molecular simulation and everyday algorithms! The book covers almost all areas of statistical mechanics and modern molecular simulation methods. The author chose an unconventional approach to statistical mechanics by starting from the Classical Mechanics (Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalism), which is particularly relevant for those folks dealing with molecular dynamics! He gives an overview of the recent research on the development of new algorithms like integrators and non-Hamiltonian dynamics and then gently connects everything to the classical StatMech. The text is extremely up-to-date and full of 'fresh' research results and careful references. The chapters on the Free energy methods and Ab initio path integrals are especially "new", with probably no comparable coverage yet around. Since the author is a theoretical physicist himself, the level of the book is rather high for somebody from another area, with the problems being, least to say "challenging" even for a graduate student. A-must-read for everyone doing molecular dynamics from a real master!!!
The book thoroughly addresses the modern aspects that people doing all kinds of dynamics in the lab need, under one cover, and in an exceptionally comprehensive manner. Very nice!
