Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring, by Alexander Rose

From Publishers Weekly

The unfamiliar terrain of Britain's American colonies made it vital for both sides to gain knowledge of enemy troop movements during the Revolutionary War. But acquiring that information called for a level of espionage that neither side was prepared for, requiring both to make up many of their operational procedures as they went along. Rose (Kings in the North) focuses on a small band of Americans, longtime friends who created an intelligence network known as the Culper Ring to funnel information to George Washington about the British troops in and around New York City. The author quotes extensively from their correspondence, showing how contentious the relationship between the general and his spies could get, especially when Washington thought they were underperforming. Rose also delves into technical aspects of the Culpers' spycraft, like their attempts at cryptography and invisible ink. Although his story is compelling in its descriptions of occupied New York, where patriots and loyalists lived together in an uneasy balance, it is diffused somewhat by lengthy digressions into the more well-known spy tales of Nathan Hale and Benedict Arnold. Be sure to follow along with the footnotes, too—Rose works in several more anecdotes among his documentation. (May 2) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. "Fascinating…. tells how the work of the spies proved to be the tipping point in the summer of 1778, helping Washington begin breaking the stalemate with the British…. [and] brings to light their crucial help in winning American independence."—Dallas Morning News"Compelling."—Publishers Weekly"After working on Washington, I knew there was a story to tell about his reliance on spies during the Revolutionary War. But I believed the story could never be told because the evidence did not exist. Well, I was wrong, and Alexander Rose tells this important story with style and wit."—Joseph Ellis, author of His Excellency: George Washington"Making brilliant use of documentary sources, Rose gives us intrigue, crossed signals, derring-do, and a priceless slice of 18th century life…Rose unfolds the story of a Long Island-based spy ring of idealists and misfits who kept George Washington informed of what was going on in enemy-occupied New York." —Richard Brookhiser, author of Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington"Rose has used some valuable new historical sources to tell this interesting story…. Excellent."—Deseret Morning News.

I live on Long Island, near Setauket, the scene of much of the action in this book. A local historian wrote a review of this book for our hometown newspaper in which she compared "Washington's Spies" to the currently popular "George Washington's Secret Six" by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yeager. Here is some of what she had to say:"Kilmeade and Yaeger have spun more than one story here. This non-fiction book hovers dangerously close to the side of fiction" [whereas] "Historians can refer with confidence to Alexander Rose’s book."The reviewer provides this side-by-side comparison of Rose’s book with Kilmeade’s and Yaeger’s:“Washington’s Spies”Bibliography: 16½ pages, including 4½ pages of primary sources alone.Notes: 60 pages, documenting every quotation and inference.“Secret Six”Bibliography: 6 pages, with 3 primary sources listed.Notes: None.I will add this: Not only is "Washington's Spies" the better history, it is well-written history that will keep you reading from cover to cover. It's not just about the Culper Spy Ring; it's also an interesting look at life in New York City and on Long Island during the Revolutionary War. You will gain added insight as to why the British lost that war and their American colonies by indulging in neglect, greed, corruption, and brutality that ultimately hardened the resolve of Patriots and lost the allegiance of many disheartened Loyalists.I give 5-stars to "Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring."

After watching the first three seasons of Turn: Washington’s Spies, I felt a kind of desperation to hear the rest of the story. I read an announcement that said that AMC, the studio that was making the show, had committed to a 4th and final season, and that (because I don’t have cable), I’d have to wait at least a year to watch season 4.If you haven’t seen TURN and you like historical fiction, watch it. The best series I’ve seen since Roots. Maybe the best ever.A cliffhanger series is as close as fiction can ever get to being as addictive as cocaine or heroin. Although I didn’t see the point of committing a crime to get my fix (it wouldn’t have helped!), I did scour the globe for something more about the story, about this set of characters that had so captivated my imagination. Finally, on Amazon, I found this book that actually inspired the series to begin with. Even better than a novel, TURN is a history book. It provides a 3rd and 4th dimension to the story. I was pretty astonished to discover how many of the characters are historical.Major Benjamin Tallmadge, Major Robert Rogers, Captain John Simcoe, Nathaniel Sackett, Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend all were real people. This book of history contains actual correspondence between Tallmadge and Woodhull--and between Woodhull and General George Washington. The letters discuss the business of spying down to its most mundane details: the fact that Woodhull (like most people in Washington’s armies) was not getting reimbursed for his expenses. This book is a fascinating addition to the story for anyone into the series and excellent standalone reading for someone interested (as I am) in American History. I recommend it highly.

Alexander Rose's book is certainly on my "top ten" list of books about the American Revolution. Is has a taut narrative that, despite all of the characters and plot twists and turns, is easy to follow. The book is also scrupulously researched, with the author delving into a myriad of original sources, as well as addressing the small body of secondary sources and their weak spots (sixty pages of footnotes and a great bibliography). There is a photo section (even in the paperback edition) with copies of some key documents accompanied by thorough decryptions, and two valuable maps. But that said, this scholarly work of non-fiction reads like a novel. In the summer of 1778 (after Nathan Hale was discovered by the British and executed for spying), General George Washington desperately needed to know where the British (ensconced in their New York City North American HQ) would strike next. To that end, he unleashed his secret weapon: an unlikely ring of spies in New York, Long Island, and Connecticut charged with discovering the enemy's battle plans and military strategy. As noted by Washington's top general Nathanael Greene, "intelligence is the life of everything in war," and the American War of Independence was no exception to this insight.Washington's small band included a young Quaker (Robert Townhend, Samuel Culper Jr.) torn between political principle and family loyalty and posing as a Loyalist, a swashbuckling sailor (Caleb Brewster) addicted to the perils of espionage, a tavern owner (Austin Roe), a Yale-educated cavalryman (Major Benjamin Tallmadge, alias John Bolton who bcame Washington's chief intelligence officer) and friend of the doomed Nathan Hale, and a peaceful, sickly farmer (Abraham Woodhull, Culper Sr.) who begged Washington to let him retire but who always came through in the end. Personally guiding these brave, flawed, everyday heroes was Washington himself. In an era when gentlemen were officers, and gentlemen did not spy, he possessed an extraordinary talent for deception--and proved an adept spymaster.Among the Culpers' greatest successes were thwarting a British attempt to counterfeit Continental currency in Connecticut in an attempt to devalue it completely, and deceiving and diverting the British in New York away from interfering with the arrival of a French fleet and troops in Newport, Rhode Island. The men he mentored were dubbed the Culper Ring. The British secret service tried to hunt them down, but they escaped by the closest of shaves thanks to their ciphers, dead drops, and invisible ink (also known as "sympathetic stain" courtesy of John Jay's brother, Sir James Jay). Washington's Spies tells a little known story of the American Revolution--one encompassing a deadly intelligence war, gunrunning, kidnappings, and defections--that has not received its due in many history books. The story is also a spirited, touching account of friendship and trust, fear and betrayal (the Culper's were almost exposed by Benedict Arnold's treachery), amid the shadowy world of divided loyalties and spies. In my original review I wrote, "I can't wait for new offerings from AMC on April 6, 2014 will be Turn, billed as "the story of America's first spy ring," based on the book. You can google the two minute trailer or a C-SPAN lecture by Dr.Rose." Unfortunately, while TURN provided some decent Revolutionary War era TV entertainment, it deviated too sharply from Dr. Rose's book. When it comes to history, there continues to be something sadly lacking in TV and movie script-writing. The true stories researched and narrated by Dr. Rose are so much more compelling than the history-as-soap-opera of AMC's TURN. For great reviews of the 10-episode series, go to the denofgeek website and search for TURN or J.L. Bell (another great scholar: check out his blog Boston1775).PS - Dr. Rose was kind enough to answer an email inquiry from me.

I have been eyeing this Erotic (BDSM) series for awhile, but I was apprehensive that it was just going to pages upon pages of sex with no storyline. Surprisingly, on the contrary, the Billionaire's Son series very much has a storyline - it's centered around a mystery. There are secrets, hidden agendas, powerful men in clandestine sex clubs, orgies, money laundering, add to that scorching sex scenes with a hot alpha male...This series consists of 8 parts/novellas that combined make up a 70,000 word read. Series is complete, all set to be read. Book/part 1 is currently FREE on Amazon US.Julia Collins (forensic accountant/32 years/brown hair) is hired by a Billionaire to perform some top secret forensic accounting. Due to the nature of the job she works at his mansion. There she comes in contact with his only son, Derek Vaughn (30's/businessman-playboy/$$$/black hair/grey eyes). At first glance Derek comes across as a jaded, spoiled and even arrogant alpha male, but as the book progresses you will see some more layers to him. I really enjoyed him. Derek and Julia are thrown into as well as thrown together to uncover a mystery in a world the secret society sex clubs and the most powerful men in the world (some light BDSM). There is suspense, intrigue, hot sex and more all wrapped up into a feel good read.***Hero rating: 4.5 starsHeroine rating: 3.5 starsStory line rating: 4 starsStory ending rating: 4 starsSex scenes rating: 4.5 starsSex scenes frequency: 4 stars******************************Overall rating: 4 starsWould I recommend this series: Yes.Would I re-read this series: Probably not.Would I read future books by this author: Yes.

I love the series of Billionaires son. Great read, hot, steamy, sex scenes. Not for the bashful ones! I do wish it was all in one book and that I would not have spent $20.00 just to read all 8. If the author comes out with another series I hope it is not in 8 seperate books but more like 3. I dont think I would pay $2.99 per book again for all 8. I couldnt put them down and that is why I had to purchase all of them. lol The books will make you really excited if your into that.

Need I say more? The ups and downs that this series is bringing is so exciting it will keep you on the edge of your seats and wet in your jeans. With all these ups and downs I truly hope they will find each other when this romance ends for them and they find the true love they have for each other...

This is one of eight books They are all terriffic The main charcters Derek and Julia are just so perfect There relatinship takes many twists and turns each one is more exciting that the one before The sex id hot and when they aren't fighting often Tjis is a great read

I find myself anxiously waiting the next book in the series. This series cemented my plunge into the erotica book craze. The more that is written by this author, the more I will buy and enjoy.

I absolutely loved all the books in this series. Arabells quinn is definitely a gifted writer and I look forward to reading more of her short stories and series. I hope there is at leasy one more book in this series to show what happends.

Really liked this series

All of The Billionaire's Son books are amazing, I really enjoy them and am anxiously awaiting the final book. All of these are a must read, including this one!

If I could give this book a zero, I would. I'm sorry I wasted my time reading this quit at 34%. Very silly, The conversations were not realistic , jumped from one thing to another, no depth to these corny characters. Just a waste of time.

Okay, so I've never heard I'd Christopher Greyson before, but he's on my radar now. This was a clean mystery. Not entirely "language"-free, but it was definitely sexual-situation free. And the morals in the story are spot on. I could fault nothing in this story. Now, it remains to be seen if the rest of his books are like this. The main characters were teenagers, Army-bound with college in mind, assisted by the military. It wasn't written in a juvenile fashion like many books are with teens as the focus. This was good, well written, suspenseful, and funny. Great dialog. Not sure if this was labeled as Christian fiction but it could be close.Jack is a kid who was abandoned, in foster care for years, and eventually, after years with an amazing black foster-care woman, was adopted by yet another amazing couple. But he has scars from the few years he had prior of being locked up, burned, and neglected by his druggie/hooker mother and others. But he always wanted to be a cop. This has given him protective instincts and seems to find himself in situations where he's chasing down muggers or chasing leads for suspects in cases...all without any permission from parents or police. It gets him in hot water. In this case, he knows a kid from his background who is accused of a crime is probably innocent and sets out to prove it.Good stuff. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Well, it had to happen. This very good and prolific novelist is also Smart with a capital S.“And Then She Was Gone” begins to fill the niche created by the Jack Stratton mystery series. Throughout that very entertaining series about an unusually daring and besieged police detective the reader gets glimpses of his past life as a foster kid. There are hints about his foster brother Chandler; the girl who’s head-over-heels in love with him, Alice aka Replacement; the loving couple who adopted him; and the angelic but tough Aunt Haddie, whose house fills with adoring foster kids. “And Then She Was Gone” begins like an episode from the Hardy Boys; in this case revived through Jack and Chandler. I had a little difficulty at first adapting their dialogue to the more mature Jack Stratton series. But then it dawned on me that the protagonists were two seventeen year olds.Frankly, when I thought about that, I decided Greyson’s technical artistry is admirable. He is able to develop immature dialogue in retrospect. Think about it. Take any adult protagonist and try to figure out how he would sound as a teenager. Amazing talent!Anyway, this who-done-it has it all: the false leads; the hero desperately trying to prove he’s doing the right thing; the good and bad cops; and even a mildly romantic scene with an out-of-reach society girl. It has the bad guy hurting the hero badly. And it has tension from beginning to end. It’s not ‘unputdownable.’ In fact, you have to put it down several times to slow down your racing heart. For intense enjoyment you need to read this after you’ve read one or two books from the Jack Stratton series; preferably the whole series like I did. You could read it on its own, but you’d deprive yourself of the tremendous enjoyment of unearthing the mysteries you find in the series. And, like I said, Greyson better write at least one more novel in this niche he created.A well-deserved Five Stars for Greyson and his “And Then She Was Gone.”

**** 4 Cranky Stars ****Stacy Shaw has her whole life ahead of her: new job, new house, a baby on the way and a doting husband. After working late one night, she disappears in the dark.Jack Stratton is seventeen and headed for the Army. He's always wanted to be police officer and his plans for the Army put him on track to achieving his aims. He's just started dating a beautiful girl and for a kid who was abandoned, put in the foster system and doesn't know where his real parents are, Jack's life is on the up and up.That is... until his world collides with Stacy Shaw's disappearance. Pressed on by codes of honor from his old neighborhood, Jack inserts himself and his best friend, Chandler into Stacy's investigation. Then all his carefully laid plans begin to unravel.I've been in a book funk until I read this story. Filled with likable characters (main and secondary), the book keeps you interested until the last page.Packed with red herrings, tense, and not to mention laugh out loud moments, this was a great escape into a 'whodunnit'.I recommend this book for all ages. It's clean and would appeal to young adults as well as those a bit older.I'm looking forward to following the adventures of Jack Stratton and the wonderful cast of characters in his life.
