The author does a nice of job of laying the groundwork on why you may want to be a business owner as opposed to an employee. Is everyone cut out to be a business owner? The answer is probably no, but a lot of have been have been lulled into the belief that they are not. The numbers used to show what your real debt might look like may a bit overblown, but they get the point across. It will definitely get your thinking on what your true situation may be, and having just a regular job just isn't enough any longer. The meat of the book is found in "Part 3: Doing Business" (although the heart of the book is probably "Part 4: Doing Life"). This section of the book does a nice job of getting one to "what" your priorities are and the "why" of what you want to do, but it is very sparse on the "how". That information appears to be reserved for the attendees of one of the author's workshops, which are pushed a few times in the various action sections. The reader will be left wanting for more information on how to identify opportunities, especially for an existing business (for which a rudimentary example is given). There was almost no discussion of due diligence, which obviously is critical, and could be the subject of an entire book.Overall, the book does a good job of sparking the possibility within of being an "Evangelpreneur", but in the end, you'll be looking for the sequel or the schedule for the next workshop.
I really got a lot from the book. I'm not sure that I personally will be able to put the information to use. However, with young adult children just getting started i life I believe they will benefit greatly and I've begun to buy copies for them to read and put into practice. After reading the book I'd suggest going to the authors website and taking his business training course too. There are concepts in the book that make you view working in a totally new way. He points out misconceptions about business and working that isn't taught in any college courses on business but should be. I love how he integrates the whole life, faith and family, into the overall planning for becoming an entrepreneur. Well written. Maybe needed a little more copy editing but not a significant factor in the readability of the book.
Good discussion and great points, but a little heavy on the self-marketing in the action steps. The theory is good, but I think the book underscores the need for high value added skills when making a living and starting successful businesses in modern day. Most modern entrepreneurs expect everyone to bring value to the enterprise through being able to "do" something that other people cannot do. A good vision and an understanding of basic economics might open the door for you, but you need hard skills to make these things a reality--just knowing the right people creates the risk that they learn what you know in a day and steal you idea...happens all the time. In other words, I think much of this advice was great 30 years ago, but these days specialization is key and most of the low hanging fruit has been taken. Also, the math on expenses and inflation is extreme and will turn off even open minded people to the rest of the good discussion. I'm not saying it's wrong, but its based upon assumptions that do not necessarily apply to the majority of readers in order to make his case. It makes things a bit more grim then they may be for the actual reader. That aside, it's a great book for gaining perspective and thinking more about how Christians should relate to the work. It pains me when Christians are hypocritical about money and encourage their children to live like the world with regards to work.EDIT: I also want to note that the author at times implies that entrepreneurship is the will of God in all Christian's lives; the only scripture that explicitly speaks of the revealed will of God in the lives of believers is 1 Thessalonians 4:3 "For this is the will of God, your sanctification...". Our sanctification is the explicit revealed will of God and that relates more to "how" we work and live than "what" we work on, so it's a stretch to say that God's will is for us all to strive to be entrepreneurs--some may truly be called into support positions for entrepreneurs. So, while I agree that this is something good that all should strive for, it's a stretch to call it the will of God in everyone's lives...it certainly wasn't the will of God in Joseph's life when he was called into servitude and then public service under Pharaoh (employment).Lastly, every time the writer writes "food" it has been replaced with "flood". Hopefully a minor issue that can be fixed in the kindle edition.
Josh Tolley totally opens up his heart and soul while teaching biblical truth about money and finances. I couldn't ask for a better teacher than this book. I see things in a new light about money and how God wants us to use it.Josh takes money one step further than just managing it, he teaches you that God wants you to have more than just a J. O. B..., Josh teaches you that God wants you to make a difference all the way around financially as a child of God. In this book you will learn how it's done...I'm not going to try to explain very much more; you just cannot abide book and find out for yourself.
It's so refreshing to read solid Bible-based wealth-increasing words and not some horrid, anti-God "prosperity gospel," blab-it-grab-it, Christian-weakening, emasculating gospel stuff.I'm SO grateful to my Banjo-lovin' buddy Danny Stock for telling us about this gem.I love Dave Ramsey, but I've always thought he had few real answers or advice for entrepreneurial believers.
Ever since I read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" the idea of employment vs. being an entrepreneur has always fascinated me. Josh does a great job of breaking down the biblical aspects of being an entrepreneur while still remaining steadfast in your Christian walk. This book will be great for those who have always considered there to be more to life than just punching a clock every work day. I do wish there was more information for people starting with very little. I need some starter ideas.
