I must say I have ordered all of Anne L Watson books on soap making because I like her description on how to make soap. She has great techniques on soaping that is old school and there is nothing like having a great teacher who know her stuff to teach you how to properly make soap. I highly recommended her books to anyone who want to learn how to make soap. There are a lot of books on soap making but not everyone has a break down on how to formulate a soap or the percentages of the amounts need to incorporated a good formula. Her techniques are simple and easy to follow like her books short and to the point.
I had bought all of Anne's books on Kindle version because it was cheaper and more environmentally friendly. I came back to buy all of them in the print version. I have recommended them to several people who want to learn to make soap because it is HANDS-DOWN the best beginner soap making book I've read. She gives all the instructions for how to handle lye carefully and I have tried many of the recipes now and they all have come out perfectly. The reason I came back for the print version is so I can make notes about the soaps in the book. Sometimes I forget what soaps I've made and what scents I might have used in those soaps so like to make notes and dates. Oh yes, I wrote her an email and asked about using other ingredients and she answered me almost instantly. Excellent book and excellent author. I recommend this book to anyone who asks me about soapmaking.
I have been using this book more and more to make different kinds of soap using the included recipes. I didn't know if I would like the e-book part of this because of not having a page turning, follow along book, but I do and I will tell you why. First of all, reading the beginning and absorbing the how and why of soap making is written in a way a reader can understand and follow. By the time you get to the recipes, you know what you are doing the correct way.The more you make, the more you know "how" to be creative and end up with some wonderful soap to use, make for family and everyone loves them as gifts! They even use them and want more!
I started making soap back in 2000 and Susan Miller Cavitch's "The Soapmaker's Companion" was my bible. So I was hesitant when people started ranting and raving about this book. After purchasing it I have to say it is all that is promised and more. While I still adore Cavtich's book, there are a couple of reasons I would recommend Watson's book for beginners:1) It is completely up to date. Not only does she mention using modern stirring methods (stick blender), all of her resources are up to date and impressive. I am a fan of most of the suppliers she lists and was familiar with them.2) Her recipes are SO accessible! Cavitch's recipes tend to require more "exotic" oils and have a bit of Julia-Child-laundry-list of ingredients. Anne Watson's recipes are bare bones and truly what they claim to be. Her Grocery Store soap ingredients can be bought at any national chain store. Love it! (my only minor complaint is that her recipes make such SMALL batches. I end up having to double most of them.)3) She provides an excellent guide to making your own recipes. Most soap books (Cavitch's is a little guilty of this) just assume you'll figure it out on your own, or that you'll only make their recipes forever. Watson walks you through creating your own recipes step by step in crystal clear detail.4) She expresses the correct amount of caution with lye. Some books bog you down with details on how dangerous it is and make you feel as though you should be wearing a hazmat suit while measuring it, while others have a lackadaisical attitude towards it and don't stress safety. Watson communicates that it needs to be treated carefully, but that you don't need to freak out over it.5) Last, but not least, Watson is contactable. She has her own website and you can contact her with any questions on the book. That, in and of itself, is pretty darn nifty.Overall I think this is the best soapmaking book for beginners and recommend it to people who are starting out.
Excellent book with good information. The only problem I had was that I bought all of her books and there is a lot of repeated information in the form of some of the advice, instructions and supply sources and such. But, since the books only cost 99 cents each it is not really an issue. The recipes are well written and much of the advice is tailored to the particular style of that book. So while after reading the first one, I found myself skipping over some of the information in the subsequent books, they were all worth the cost.
I love this book. I was really intimidated about making soap when I first started researching, but this book answered all of my questions and gave me the confidence to dive in. I've made her Shea Butter Supreme recipe a few times and I just love it. She goes from the basics of what you'll need, walks you through a recipe, offers info on designing your own recipes and even lovely packaging of the finished product. I had a couple of silly questions, I sent her an email as the book suggested and I got a response from her within a couple of hours. Great book, very nice lady. I plan on picking up her Milk Soapmaking and Smart Lotionmaking books as well.
