I read Julie of the Wolves quite some time ago and loved it, both for the character of Julie and for her interaction with the wolf pack and survival in the wilderness. I had borrowed the book, and after one reading immediately longed for my own copy. There it was on Amazon. One of the most enchanting books of its type I've ever read. I also bought the sequels, written about a quarter century later, and I was just as enchanted. The story is told in three parts, and while it's in many ways written for a younger audience (length, beautiful but relatively simple prose, and light brushstrokes for the harder parts like why Julie, as a 13 year old, ran away from her abusive husband), it does not shy from life's trials at all but immerses you in them with her. Part one drops you in the middle of her struggle for survival in the arctic wilderness, and you learn with her as she both cleverly figures things out but also makes mistakes, and especially as she befriends and is befriended by a wolf pack. Part two takes you back to the events that led to her running away, and part three brings the conclusion, which, like life, leaves you hanging because she has to make some difficult choices. Fortunately, Jean Craighead George came back to her story 25 years later, picking up where she left off.

An excellent book full of natural and cultural history. Some events,though necessary to the story, will be disturbing to younger readers. It is a spellbinding account of life in Alaska by a very knowledgeable author. I would recommend discussing the issues of rape and hunting and family conflict as the story develops.

This is the story of Miyax, a thirteen-year-old Eskimo girl who must decide whether to choose her own destiny or let others decide it for her: all within very constricted circumstances. Miyax's mother died years ago, and she lives with her father. But when she is forced to go away to school in another village and live with her aunt, she hears that her father has died. She then does what he told her to do: marry an Eskimo boy named Daniel. This marriage had been arranged by the parents. Miyax marries, but Daniel forces sex on Miyax, and she flees.The main part of the story tells how Miyax learns to live in the wild, with a pack of wolves, by studying their ways and being accepted by them. If it weren't for the wolves, she would starve to death. Then Miyax learns that her father did not die, he married a white woman and has adopted non-Eskimo ways. Her father wants Miyax to come live with him, but he hunts wolves from a small aircraft, firing down on and killing them. Miyax cannot tolerate this and runs away again, determined to live on her own, in the wild. In the end, she realizes with great sadness that the days of Eskimos living off the land are gone forever, and she returns to her father.The wilderness scenes with the wolves are wonderful, and Miyax is an empathetic hero. There's a lot going on in this book, plot-wise, and I'm not sure the resolution works, even though it is realistic. But this is a powerful story of a thirteen-year-old girl living on the edge of two different worlds, having to decide which one she will live in.

This was my favorite book when I was in third grade (1989). I haven't read it since, but I was having some wine and mentioned it so my son bought it for my birthday.It's a little different than I remember, but it's still fabulous.I never knew there were sequels (my son bought them for me, too) and I cannot wait to read them!

I read Julie of the Wolves as a child and ordered it to read it with my nephew who is in fourth grade during the Christmas Vacation. He loved the adventure of trying to survive on your own in the frozen Alaskan tundra and joining the pack of wolves. It is a good book for both boys and girls from 4th to 6th grade or as a quick read for older.

This is a classic nature saga, one that will make you cry with love for the girl and the wolves that become her friends and saviors. It's so wonderful in so many ways--the relationship between humans and our fellow creatures that we share our world with is depicted with depth and sensitivity, and the book will leave a lasting impression. There is much interesting information about the ways of wolves, too, which de-fuses the fearful stereotypes often seen in literature. Good for both adults and young people.

Beautiful and sad, this book is not just for the young. Adults can glean much about wolf packs and the need to see them in a different light. There is much to learn about ecosystems and what man is doing to them. Going to buy the next book in the series now.

What I love about this book is the relationship Miyax has with the wolves and with the animals and nature. The ending though left me like, Huh? That’s it? What happens? I wanted there to be more closure

A good read for sure but the title is a little misleading. This book is centered around two specific events and the transition between the two is rather rough. The first 150 pages are about the Mayflower voyage, the first Puritan settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts and their symbiotic relationship with the Pokanoket tribe. The focus of the second half of the book is the Puritan vs. Indian conflict known as King Philip’s War. This involves all of New England and happened about 65 years after the Plymouth settlement is established. Frankly, I was a little lost during the transition and it was a hard to follow for a few pages. I think that a more appropriate title would have helped. Something like the “Mayflower and King Phillip’s War” or “The Puritans in the New World 1610-1676” would have been more accurate.The settlement in Plymouth would not have survived the first year if it were not for their relationship with the Pokanoket Indians. The New England tribes were decimated by European diseases which they had no resistance to. Historians surmise that it was the plague that struck them in the first decade of the 17th century. The plague killed up to 90% of the Indians that had inhabited New England. The area where the pilgrims would eventually establish the first settlement of Plymouth had contained thousands of Indians just a few years prior to Mayflower's arrival. When the Pilgrims arrived it was unoccupied.The Pokanoket tribe was hit especially hard by the plague and they were weakened more so than several of the neighboring tribes. These tribes, such as the Narrangasetts, took advantage of their weakened neighbors. The Pokanoket chief, Massasoit, leveraged his relationship with the Pilgrims to survive against the Narrangasetts. The two groups more than co-existed. The two groups had a symbiotic relationship. Unfortunatly, the Pilgrim’s ancestors had forgotten how critical the Pokanokets were to the survival of their forefathers. Subsequent generations of Puritans took advantage of the Indians. This led to a war with the Pokanokets that on a per capita basis was the bloodiest war in the history of North America.The lessons gleaned form the pages of this book have been repeated over and over again throughout history. Bad policy started King Phillip’s war. It could have been easy to avoid. Revenge was taken by the frustrated Puritans who could not catch the warring factions so they conveniently took revenge against praying and neutral tribes. On the other side, allies of Pokanoket sachem King Phillip killed the relatives of Plymouth descendants of whom King Phillip considered friends. The conflict spiraled out of control.The war was not going well for the Puritans until Mayflower descendant Benjamin Church recruited a strike force of Puritans and Indians from friendly tribes. He was able to convince warring Indians to change sides and join Church’s party. Church granted them amnesty and these Indians in-turn taught Church their tactics. They taught the Puritans how to move without being detected and how to avoid ambushes and how to set them. Church and his combined strike force used these tactics to hunt down King Phillip and to end the war.The book gives Benjamin Church his due as one of the first great early American Indian fighters that you never heard of. Like the pilgrims, Church would not have been successful without his reliance on friendly Native Americans.Enjoy the book.

As an amateur genealogist, I have managed to trace my family to the Mayflower. I read about the Plymouth settlements and the ships in high school, but I think we ignored this part of history in college. This book is so easy to read and so factual that I couldn't put it down. I have both the paperback and the kindle versions - I've found this is the best way to read any book I want to retain and understand fully.

Excellent! The only criticism I have is that I wish it lasted longer. Very readable, and although I taught history at one time there are events brought to light that I did not know like: French fisherman brought the plague to the East Coast. I mean I knew about the diseases brought by earlier explorers to North & South America but I did not know about the plague coming to the North East the year before the Pilgrims arrived. The implications are fascinating.

If you think the popular history of the pilgrims is an accurate and sufficient depiction of the actual events then you owe it to yourself to indulge in this fascinating book which is "lean" enough with the details to keep the reader moving along in this frank and vivid account of the origins of much of this country's history.The fact that 35 million of todays citizens are descendants from that small colony of early settlers is reason enough to warrant your time and attention.

The book was quite interesting. It certainly varies from what I learned in grade school back in the '50s. The clash of cultures combined with the human tendencies on both sides brings closer to reality what happened back in the early Plymouth colony and the other Massachusetts and surrounding colonies. It is certainly worth a read. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it.

Not just a well written book on one of the most famous ships in history, but very informative on the people who decided to cross to unknown lands and what drove them to make such life altering decisions. What little you knew - or thought you knew - about the "Pilgrims" and the indigenous people who took them in is greatly revealed and explained, with much sympathy to the relationships and bonds that were sorely tested in future generations.Nathan Philbrick does a great job of introducing familiar historical facts and then expanding on them and making this old story new. Highly recommend.

This was a highly detailed and historically accurate reporting of the specific period of time surrounding the Plymouth landing. It was a slow read for me because of so many names to try to keep track of (some familiar and some not), and the heavy accent on who did what when and where.The essence of the story is clear however, and the great difference between this historically correct accounting and what I remember learning in elementary school is stunning. For that reason alone, I would highly recommend this book. I would also say that the read got easier for me as I became engaged in the plight of the native indians and the unfortunate decisions made by leadership on both sides.Missing, and disappointing for me, was the exploration of the women in the group of original and first generation of those who landed at Plymouth. This is likely due to the limited information and recording by those women. There was also limited character development, again likely due to the limited information available.I loved learning of the female indian leaders, and the efforts and struggles on the part of all the indian leaders to build relationships and co-exist with the new arrivals. Again, that perspective makes this book a worthwhile read.

So! The third installment of Kingsbridge is HERE and I am absolutely loving Column! 5 stars all the way, everything you'd want from Ken F. in a book. I want to talk directly to the reader who has not yet read any of the 3 Kingsbridge books. You must start with Pillars of the Earth. It's the greatest book I've ever read and it unearthed my passion for historical fiction. Even IF you're not into historical fiction, it's impossible that you wouldn't love this book or its series or any of Ken's novels. Pillars has had a lifelong impact on me. It's that book that just stays with you after you've finished the amazing journey it will lead you on. I'm not a master with words or reviews, but if you've yet to read any of these all I have to say is: you're in for a treat!

Pillars and World Without End are my favorite books of all time. I'm also very interested in religious history and persecution, so I highly anticipated the release of this book.Unfortunately, it was just really bad. The book had nothing to do with Kingsbridge, which was disappointing, but I could have gotten over that, IF the book had contained rich characters and plots like the first two books. Instead, this book featured super boring characters who meandered their way through 900 pages of ABSOLUTELY NO PLOT. Additionally, there were about five new people introduced per page, all with similar names (Francis, Henri), and you never knew if they were going to be major characters, or if they would never be mentioned again. I seriously started taking notes. I have about five handwritten pages of names....and I'd say about 10% turned out to be recurring characters. The other 90% had no impact on the plot.Unlike Pillars & WWE (and most of follett's other wonderful books), I never cared about any of the characters, or knew what motivated them. I found myself constantly thinking "wait, why are they doing this?" Or "wait, when was the last time these two characters interacted with each other? It doesn't make sense that they're enemies!"This was just a complete mess. I really looked forward to this book for months, and I hesitated to write this review until I was finished with the whole thing...hoping against hope that it would get better. It didn't. I'm so disappointed.

Though I've read the earlier novels in this series I was not and am not obsessed with them, nor am I obsessed with Ken Follett despite having read many of his books. Having said thatTHIS NOVEL IS JUST PLAIN EXCELLENT and sadly, very timely. The overall theme is tolerance vs. bigotry. Centered in Elizabethan England and peopled primarily with English characters, it portrays the conflicting views (not all that many when you come down to it) between Catholics and Protestants and the ensuing horrible bloodshed through much of the 16th century. A significant portion of the novel is set in France, with smaller episodes in Spain and the Netherlands.Protagonist Ned, after witnessing Catholic excesses (triggered more by greed and hopes of material gain than by religious belief) decides to devote his life to promoting tolerance and fighting excesses. Joining up with Princess/Queen Elizabeth he works in multiple capacities to support her policy of comparative tolerance. Evil Pierre, whose entire being is permeated by greed rather than religion, conspires with supporters of Catholicism in France (who are power-hungry rather than religious believers), triggering multiple episodes of bloodshed.Ned and Pierre are juxtaposed against one another as are the two women in Ned's life. English Margery is a true believer in Catholicism and is ready to do what she can to preserve the faith, legal or not. French Sylvie is Protestant and ready to do whatever it takes to assist other Protestants. Both become involved in illegal activities because of their beliefs. They are essentially alike.A host of other characters, some historical and others fictional, take the reader from the coronation of Elizabeth to the Guy Fawkes plot and hopefully remind readers that religious (and racial, too, for that matter) differences are really superficial and that a great deal more unites people than divides them. Take notice: World of 2017!

Spoiler alert.......I am a huge fan of Mr. Follett and have read many of his novels over the years. I was super excited about this novel and started reading it as soon as the book was delivered. I finished a few days later and am sad to say I had to force myself to finish the book. I struggled to connect to any of the characters in the story......and sort of got lost with multiple storylines and minor characters. The love story between Ned and Margery started out promising.....but then became a minor plot point for most of the book. It was similar to the Jack/Aliena and Caris/Merthin plot lines (from the previous Kingsbridge books) but with much less detail. I found that I wasn't even rooting for the romance to prevail. Let's not forget the main character missing for most of the book.......Kingsbridge itself. Most of the story is in other places and I found myself constantly wondering what was going on back in Kingsbridge. I am going to reread the book, maybe it will be better the second time.

Like so many, I am a tremendous fan of Ken Follett, and have read and re-read Pillars of the Earth and World without End. I enjoyed them as much for their rich characterization as for the splendid history immersion. Like many, I am very disappointed with Column of Fire and also will not finish the book-it compares so poorly with the first two Kingsbridge books. There was a clue upon opening the book: the big, wide spaces between the lines of the type set. The book has as much empty space as the type set. Although there was, of course, the occasional Follett brilliance, overall the book seemed to be only a very good rough draft. Like another Reviewer, I was dismayed with the occasional use of modern slang. I am rating it 3 stars only because Follett at his worst is better than most at their best. This book will be donated to the library.

I thought I was going to throw this across the room when I came to the old song of "I became a vegetarian when I realized Harold the chicken had a personality," but I kept on just see what would happen.Hughes goes on to say that her family has since reversed and now eats more beef, etc., for health reasons. I like her writing not because she eats meat, but because she not only changes her position based on more information, she is totally OK with your making your own decisions.Do you want to be vegan? She's OK with that. But she also explains other food options, such as insects, being a localvore, and 3D printed food. (Yes, you read that right.) Hughes goes through food history and touches on such subjects as pesticides, organics, and gluten with respect for the fact that much of we eat is fashion, but works hard at providing science.Good source notes. Nice index and glossary. Good "further reading" section. And at 96 pages, it just barely makes it but will generally be acceptable for kids and teens doing homework.

At least some of the 'facts' they present are based on folklore, thus I wonder how much of the information in this book is actual fact and how much is based on erroneous data. The authors are clearly Evolutionary believers and so all of their history is slanted in that direction. They also didn't bother to do actual research into other believe systems to get actual facts to support their presumptions. I borrowed this book for my son but I did not let him read it. Question about this book is it Non-Fiction or Fiction?

I am new to Critical Care and wanted a book to help with the new IV drugs I would see especially. This book is a great addition to a general drug book. I includes more IV information than a general drug book. A few of the dosage recommendations are different than what my facility uses which is a little confusing. But overall, I use this book most days!

I really like this guide because it gives you the generic name first. then what it's indications for use are and the expected outcomes or theraputic effects. And in a different colored box it gives you the contraindications and cautions. Basically, right on the first page it gives you the most important facts first and then goes on from there.

I use my palm all the time.. I love Epocrates for its ease of use. But for indepth info on drugs we use day and day it..it cannot be beat!!

This is a good, in a sense, fable: don't judge a book (or fish) by its cover. Not a masterpiece but a solid "good read" picture book.

I had this book in my classroom as part of an assessment in the beginning of the year. When the coordinator asked for it back to store, I couldn't find it anywhere. It is obvious to me that someone loved the book and took it home. So I bought it to replace the one that was lost. I would still buy it anyway.

I used this book to base a week of curriculum around for my preschool class. They children enjoyed it and we pulled a lot of themes from the book. The illustrations are beautiful.

About the Author

PETER CLOTTEN is a seasoned equine expert who not only spends the majority of his time with horses, but also enjoys writing about them just as much in his work as an author. Since the 1980s, he has traveled extensively, interviewed world-famous horse trainers, and observed wild mustangs for various book projects (including Hengste erziehen, 2008, The Last Mustang, 2009). In addition to his role as an author and journalist, he is the proud owner of several horses, including a quarter horse breed stallion, and lives in his adopted home in southwestern France. Since 2012, he has also organized a series of horse photography workshops with American photographer Tony Stromberg.
