These are my favorite travel guides. I've used them for Vietnam, Angkor Wat, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and a few other places. They give you a snippets of information and facts, elaborate where necessary, and show diagrams, maps, photos, and give you practical information about what to expect, the customs of the culture you're visiting, etc. I find I can get any information I need online, of course, but I like having something to read ahead of preparing for a trip at home. Cuba isn't known for having easy access to wifi, so that's good to know - this way any maps, etc. can be downloaded in advance. All just very helpful information and printed on thick, glossy pages. They're a little on the heavy side, but not thick so it can be overlooked. I have several on my Wish List to buy in succession after finishing this one and deciding where to go after that.

Because I wanted to read up a bit on Cuba before visiting the country, a friend loaned me her copy of DK’s Eyewitness Travel Guide. After 15 minutes of browsing, I ordered my own copy so I could mark it up. I took a group tour, so I didn’t use some sections (where to stay and eat). However, the general information sections and the ones about the areas I visited are now thoroughly highlighted and dog-eared along with scrawled notes. If you want in depth information, you might want to consider something longer, but I’ve traveled a lot internationally and I can say I definitely got my money’s worth with DK’s Cuba guide.

We just got back from 10 days in Cuba and used this book, the Moon guide, and Conner Gory's 101 Things Every Woman Must Do in Cuba. The latter was the best and this one was the worst. It's like this guide was written by someone who had never been to Cuba. The itineraries are ridiculous. In Cuba, everything takes longer than one might think due to the government and the cultural norms that change the pace of life: little internet, meals that last 2 hours, lack of a subway system. DK at one point suggests that the reader go to 6 museums in one day! The other aspect of this style of travel writing is that it almost wants the traveler to NOT engage or meet with any Cubans in Cuba. Cuba is a spontaneous country and making down to the minute plans is just not possible when the country simply moves at a slower pace and it takes longer to get things done. Tons of the restaurants and bars recommended have since closed, hours are not definite, and a lot of the museums have also changed. Cuba is in flux and for this much money you should add an e-supplement. Finally, titling a chapter "Survival Guide" is some colonialist nonsense. Like, Cuba is second world but many people are happy and thriving. No need to tell the reader how to "survive" in a country with free healthcare.

I've bought DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for a number of countries I visited in the past so I didn't hesitate to buy the same brand for our upcoming trip to Cuba. I was very disappointed in this book. It's many fewer pages than other DK guides and that was reflected in the brief mention of so many places and things about Cuba. Even though I haven't been to Cuba yet, I knew about a number of places to visit that weren't mentioned in this guide. It's really a very superficial overview, leaving us to frequently say "but tell us more about that..." You also should know that the guide comes from England, a country where residents are free to travel to Cuba without restrictions. As an American with restrictions, I found that some of what was written wasn't relevant.

I always liked these travel books. But on this one, the font was small & the print was light grey so hard to read. The pictures & maps was excellent as usual. Not sure if I will buy this series again.

Contains pertinent information in sufficient details, but with a room for improvements. Needs updating: symphony orchestra is non-existent, no information, no program, no performances. Many houses in Havana are falling and crumbling: during our stay in Havana early in November 2013, a house collapsed and killed four people. Havana looks like Dresden in 1945.In the Museo de la Revolucion, a whole wall contains "Rincon de los Imbeciles," depicting caricatures of Bautista and the US Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr, and G. W. Bush with a swastika on his helmet. This depiction in a poor taste was not mentioned in the Guide. Capitolio is closed and under reconstruction, but not much work was performed. Same for the Gran Teatro de la Habana and other buildings.A picture on p.78 in DK guide with old 1952 Chevy in front of the Teatro is from the Michelin guide (2011). Havana, on p. 37: Gran Teatro and 1950's American autos by Claire Bobyer/Michelin. A copywrite infringement?

These are my favorite travel books. I've been buying them for years. I'd give 5 stars except on this particular book the print is very small & quite light & I cannot read it! Very frustrating.

This was an informative story of Delta Force's creation and the struggles and obstacles that the founders faced. This is not a Rambo story, nor does it give juicy details of Delta Force missions. The more you read, the more you realize just how big the Army is and how entrenched the bureaucracy is. At times the book can be quite boring, and it's difficult to keep up with all of the Army staff mentioned in the book. Charlie Beckwith's whining also gets old, and the way he carried himself after Delta's first mission was disappointing. I'd be interested in hearing other accounts of Delta's creation in order to validate this man's tale.

This is an interesting book, but in many ways it's not exactly what you might expect it to be. What it is a great history of the origins of "Delta Force" in Vietnam and the creation of this group in the 1970s and 80s by Col. Beckwith. The book itself is quite interesting and filled with political intrigue and military action. However, half way through it becomes a book on project management as the author deals with the problems of developing the army's elite anti-terrorist unit.It is interesting to note that Beckwith writes about getting his men training. But doesn't get very specific with the skills he required. I think this was an intentional as at the time the book was published there was little information available about this unit. More current information can be found in Eric Haney's book Inside Delta Force: The Story of America's Elite Counter terrorist Unit and The Mission, The Men and Me: Lessons from a former Detla Force Commander by Pete Blaber. It is also interesting to note that while he does give a complete description of what he saw on the failed Iran Hostage Mission that this portion of the book is very small in comparison to the rest of the book. If you are interested in first person accounts of the hostage situation, I would recommend reading 444 Days by Lt. Col. Scott, and Guests of the Ayatollah by Mark Bowdin (not first person). What I enjoyed about this book is it is well written, shows the author has a sense of humor, and most of the entire trip down Memory Lane. I remember these times. They had a big impact on who I am and what I've done in life. This book is a time capsule.

One of the most interesting stories I've ever read. Not only is it interesting from the perspective of learning how Delta Force came into being, but the breadth and depth of the way the operators are trained and the meticulous planning that goes into a mission was a real eye-opener. I started out with a huge amount of respect for Special Forces already, and this book increased that respect to awe, and even more appreciation for and gratitude to them. What was just as interesting and terribly disturbing was the shortsightedness and turf-protecting response from the military brass that Col. Beckwith had to struggle against for years. He's not shy about naming names either, which I give him a lot of credit for. It's frightening to think that our armed forces are being run by such short-sighted, petty, and "what's in it for me, to hell what's best for the troops or the country" high-level military brass.Great book, great read, and Colonel Beckwith is a true hero. Thank you, Sir.

Colonel Charlie Beckwith was the founding commander of Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, also known as Delta Force. Beckwith gives his unique first person perspective on the challenges he found in setting up a quick reaction counterterrorism unit that many other countries already had (and demonstrated in real world activities). Beckwith detailed his experience, from working with the British Special Air Service, to combat with the Special Forces in Vietnam, to establish a unit in the 1970s. He doesn't leave out any of the warts, especially of people who got in his way.The story is fascinating mostly for its demonstration of the large institutional roadblocks thrown in the way of those leading new initiatives. In this case it was "Big Army" vs. COL Beckwith. Though he had key champions in high places, Beckwith still ran up against established units who thought his effort would be redundant. He ran into people who disliked him personally and therefore oppose him. In the end the requirement for a counterterrorism force became obvious, especially with the way other countries demonstrated their effectiveness, and how no other unit in the US military had been identified to fill the role.Beckwith ends the story with his telling of Operation EAGLE CLAW, the attempted rescue of American hostages in Tehran in 1980. As is well known the operation ended in failure and the hostages weren't released for nearly another year. Beckwith chalks the failure up to too many hands being involved in the operation, and the surprise sandstorm.Though Beckwith ends his story rather abruptly with a short chapter of the continued need for Delta Force, and many of the details were (and are) likely still classified, the first person account is still worth the read. And even though Beckwith often appears bitter, the personal details about how the sausage is made is fascinating.

I have read a number of books recently about the military and especially Special Operations. This is an interesting story of one man who saw the problem/opportunity of what the Army was missing and had the fore sight and guts move the program through a painfully ignorant bureaucracy. Good read, perhaps a little too detailed and felt there were some interesting stories left out. If you are former military as I am, you can appreciate what he went through.

This book was helpful to me. In the end the problems with my DIL were less related to me and more related to her and my son, but it did illustrate to me some patterns of behavior that I could improve. I never thought that giving her a subscription (I got a great buy on multiples) to Martha Stewart Living would be something she resented, but I guess it was.I think it's better to buy the paper book than the Kindle as the test is harder to score via electronics and I find myself wanting to reference parts of it and that would be easier if I had post-it notes in the book.Still, if you're having issues with you in-laws this is a good read. It probably would also be a good gift for a new MIL, just to head off trouble. In the end I think my son and his wife are going to split up, but I feel like I'm prepared for the other son, and if this son finds someone new I'll start off with better patterns.

Great book. Shows 4 types of MILs,4 types of DILs , and 3 types of sons. Perception of each other is the key. Then she gives ways to feel better internally and then actual actions you can take to help improve relationships.

Dr Brann really knows what she is talking about with these sometimes complicated relationship issues. I bought a few things from her, and also emailed her. She was kind enough to email me back even! I sought out other helps, but thanks to her our reluctant relations are on their way back to happier times!

Dr. Brand's book is written in a way that made it easy to see my actions from my DIL's point of view and recognized the origins of her reactions. I loved the characters (Doubting Donna, Weird Wendy) who I expected to be simplistic and one-dimensional but were anything but. Just last weekend, using some of Dr. Brand's suggestions, I was able to approach my DIL differently and experience different results. This is a book that I will read again and again (at this point, I need daily refreshers!!). I highly recommend this book to any mother (even those with daughters!!).

The book has some good insight but the author only writes about certain combinations of the types of DIL and MIL. I didn't understand her rational for only including advice for certain parings. It was a very easy read.

This book not only helped me but I was able to show my husband what part each of us was playing. It helped me realize it wasn't me. We all had things to work on.

The book has a lot of good "hands-on" information and no psycho-babble. Easy to apply and use when you still have a relationship with your in law. Unfortunately my DIL has cut off communication and my grandson from me so it will be hard to follow Dr. Brann's advice. Perhaps I could have used this earlier in our relationship. :(

A big help so far. Havent finished reading it yet...but have learned alot already. Will be a book to keep and refer back to.

This was posted as a "new" book. It was not. It even had a signature on the inside flap.

I loved to see what Tucson looked backed than, there was hardly any vegetative growth whatsoever, that's why so many people moved here if they had allergies. Unfortunately it is worst now than anywhere else. Allergies are a big problem here because of all the growth. But it was cool to see the streets like Speedway (major thorough fare) still is with a dirt road. Nothing much east of what is mid town now. It is incredible how much it has grown. I've lived here since 1971. It's unbelievable how hard it is to get around town.

This book is a classic in my home. My father worked with Mr. Gene Magee in the electrical field, and Mr. Magee was also a local photographer who chronicled Tucson history through his pictures. This book really shows the progression of Tucson's growth from the '30s and 40's and into the '90s. Those of us in Tucson now can see the growth that has occurred since the '90s as well. My only complaint is that Mr. Magee, who passed away, is not around to photograph Tucson and produce an updated version of this book!

The Road to Character, by David Brooks

Review

“David Brooks’s gift—as he might put it in his swift, engaging way—is for making obscure but potent social studies research accessible and even startling. . . . [The Road to Character is] a hyper-readable, lucid, often richly detailed human story. . . . In the age of the selfie, Brooks wishes to exhort us back to a semiclassical sense of self-restraint, self-erasure, and self-suspicion.”—Pico Iyer, The New York Times Book Review“David Brooks—the New York Times columnist and PBS commentator whose measured calm gives punditry a good name—offers the building blocks of a meaningful life.”—Washingtonian “This profound and eloquent book is written with moral urgency and philosophical elegance.”—Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree and The Noonday Demon“[Brooks] emerges as a countercultural leader. . . . The literary achievement of The Road to Character is inseparable from the virtues of its author. As the reader, you not only want to know about Frances Perkins or Saint Augustine. You also want to know what Brooks makes of Frances Perkins or Saint Augustine. The voice of the book is calm, fair and humane. The highlight of the material is the quality of the author’s moral and spiritual judgments.”—Michael Gerson, The Washington Post“A powerful, haunting book that works its way beneath your skin.”—The Guardian (U.K.) “This learned and engaging book brims with pleasures.”—Newsday“Original and eye-opening . . . At his best, Brooks is a normative version of Malcolm Gladwell, culling from a wide array of scientists and thinkers to weave an idea bigger than the sum of its parts.”—USA Today“David Brooks breaks the columnist’s fourth wall. . . . There is something affecting in the diligence with which Brooks seeks a cure for his self-diagnosed shallowness by plumbing the depths of others. . . . Brooks’s instinct that there is wisdom to be found in literature that cannot be found in the pages of the latest social science journals is well-advised, and the possibility that his book may bring the likes of Eliot or Samuel Johnson—another literary figure about whom he writes with engaging sympathy—to a wider general readership is a heartening thought.”—Rebecca Mead, The New Yorker “If you want to be reassured that you are special, you will hate this book. But if you like thoughtful polemics, it is worth logging off Facebook to read it.”—The Economist“Brooks uses the powerful stories of people such as Augustine, George Eliot and Dwight Eisenhower to inspire.”—The Times (U.K.)“Elegant and lucid . . . a pitch-perfect clarion call, issued not with preachy hubris but from a deep place of humility, for awakening to the greatest rewards of living . . . The Road to Character is an essential read in its entirety—Anne Lamott with a harder edge of moral philosophy, Seneca with a softer edge of spiritual sensitivity, E. F. Schumacher for perplexed moderns.”—Maria Popova, Brain Pickings

I’m a student of moral development, so the idea that a scholar devoted himself to the root of character development pulled me into this book.I was grateful for the multiple vignettes on various men and women who found themselves on their path to maturity and ultimately character. It was difficult to follow the theme at times, but that was part of the charm of this book — I found myself getting immersed in each real-life story. The author returns often to the Protestant ethic...one that believes we are inherently flawed and cannot be made whole on our own. I share this ethic, but I was disappointed how forceful the author was at pointing it out (too often). It would have been more effective to allow the reader to arrive at these concepts on his/her own.The last chapter effectively summarizes the author’s intent, that pride is the root of all that undermines character, and humility is the root of the development of it.I highly recommend this book to any student of moral development. While morality is can be found on many paths, this one quote from the book is the common denominator:“Character is built in the course of your inner confrontation. Character is a set of dispositions, desires, and habits that are slowly engraved during the struggle against your own weakness.”

Writing an adequate review for best-selling author David Brook’s “The Road to Character” has been challenging. I typically work with five pages of detailed notes when reviewing a book but found myself with twenty-one pages for this review.Brooks has written a gem of a book, one that raises the bar for future discussions of “character”. It takes time to absorb and savor. Brooks says publicly that he wrote this book to save his own soul.“The Road to Character” is about the cultural shift from the “little me” to the “BIG ME,” from a culture that encourages people to think humbly of themselves to a culture that encourages people to see themselves as the center of the universe. This cultural shift encourages us to think about having a great career but leaves nothing for us to develop an inner life and character. For Brooks, we have lost our way to “being good” and “doing good.”Brooks frames the discussion by contrasting “resume virtues” - those skills that one brings to the job market that contribute to external success – with “eulogy virtues” – those that are at the core of our being like courage, honesty, loyalty, and the quality of our relationships that contribute to real joy. These are embodied in two competing parts, Adam I and Adam II, of our nature that are a constant source of contradiction and tension.Adam I is the external Adam. He wants to build, create, produce and discover things. He is characterized by actively seeking recognition, satisfying his desires, being impervious to the moral stakes involved. He has little regard for humility, sympathy, and honest self-confrontation, which are necessary for building character. He wants to have high status, win victories, and conquer the world.Adam II is the internal Adam. He wants to embody certain moral qualities. He wants to love intimately, to sacrifice self in the service of others, to live in obedience to some transcendent truth, and to have a cohesive inner soul that honors creation in one’s own possibilities. Adam II is charity, love, and redemption.Adam I is at work in today’s “BIG ME” culture. “Big Me” messages are everywhere; you are special; trust yourself; and be true to yourself. This ‘Gospel of Self’ begins with childhood when awards and rewards are given for just being, not doing. “We are all wonderful, follow your passion, don’t accept limits and chart your own course.”This has led to an ethos based on a “ravenous hunger in a small space of self-concern, competition, and a hunger for distinction at any cost,” an ethos where envy has replaced admiration. This self-centeredness leads to several unfortunate directions: selfishness, the use of other people as a means to an end, seeing oneself as superior to everyone else, and living with a capacity to ignore and rationalize one’s imperfections and inflate one’s virtues. The “BIG ME” culture distorts the purpose of our journey and the meaning of life. “Parts of themselves go unexplored and unstructured. They have a vague anxiety that their life has not achieved its ultimate meaning and significance. They live with unconscious boredom, not really loving, and unattached to the moral purpose that gives life it’s worth. They lack the internal criteria to make unshakable commitments. They never develop inner constancy, the integrity that can withstand popular disapproval or a serious blow. They foolishly judge others by their abilities and not by their worth. This external life will eventually fall to pieces.”In this increasingly “BIG ME” culture, Brooks became haunted by the voices of the past and the quality of humility and character they exhibited. People in the past guarded themselves against some of their least attractive tendencies to be prideful, self-congratulatory, and hubristic. “You would not even notice these people. They were reserved. They did not need to prove anything in the world.” They embodied humility, restraint, reticence, temperance, respect, and soft discipline. “They radiated a sort of moral joy. They answered softly when challenged harshly. They were silent when unfairly abused, dignified when others tried to humiliate them, and restrained when others tried to provoke them…But they got things done. They were not thinking about what impressive work they were doing. They were not thinking about themselves at all. They just seemed delighted by the flawed people around them. They made you feel funnier and smarter when you spoke with them. They moved through all social classes with ease. They did not boast. They did not lead lives of conflict-free tranquility but struggled towards maturity. These people built a strong inner character, people who achieved a certain depth. They surrendered to the struggle to deepen their soul.”Brooks highlights the lives of prominent and influential people - Francis Perkins, Dwight Eisenhower, Dorothy Day, George C. Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, George Eliot, St. Augustine, Samuel Johnson, Michel de Montaigne – to articulate the diverse roads taken by a diverse set of people, white and black, male and female, religious and secular, literary and non-literary. Not one of them was even close to perfect. They were acutely aware of their own weaknesses and they waged an internal struggle against their sins to emerge with some measure of self-respect..“The Road to Character” is a “road less traveled.” It involves moments of moral crisis, confrontation, and recovery. To go up, one first has to go down (The “U Curve”); one must descend into the valley of humility to climb to the heights of character. Only then will one have the ability to see their own nature, their everyday self-deceptions, and shatter all Illusions of self-mastery.Humility is central to the journey. Humility leads to wisdom, a moral quality of knowing what you don’t know and finding a way to manage ignorance, uncertainty, and limitation. It offers freedom…freedom from the need to prove your superiority. Alice had to be small to enter Wonderland. “Only the one who descends into the underworld rescues the beloved.”The paradox for Adam I is that he cannot achieve enduring external success unless he builds a solid moral core as sought by Adam II. Without inner integrity, your Watergate, your scandal, your betrayal, will eventually happen. Adam I versus Adam II, Adam I ultimately depends on Adam II.Brooks wrote this book to learn who has traveled this road to character, and what it looks like. He found you cannot be the good person you want to be unless you wage this campaign against self. I highly recommend this book as one of the most profound books published this year.End note: Brook’s sections on love and suffering are excellent.

To be brief about this, The Road to Character should be required reading and, perhaps more importantly, discussion throughout the 50 States. He begins by asking the interesting question of whether the individual wants to be remembered as his/her "Resume" or "Eulogy". Do we lead our lives fueled by a desire to establish a resume of success or to be remembered by others in a eulogy. He presents this approach by referring to Adam 1 (Resume of significance) and Adam 2 (Eulogy of a life well spent). Mr. Brooks understands that we human beings are complicated animals and that we are all fallible and subject to the lesser instincts of life. But he also understands that we have the ability to understand ourselves - to look inward and recognize those weaknesses - to become part of a greater good than the self. He chooses as multiple topics of conversation, a number of significant individuals in our history and he analyzes how these very different people dealt with themselves. We all, everyone of us, need to understand that heroism comes in many forms and one need not be - cannot be - without flaw. The trick is to understand oneself and view our roles as parts of the jigsaw of life where we can all play a part. "Character" means knowing ourselves and remaining loyal to our nobler aspirations despite those flaws.

I read Brooks's columns in The New York Times sometimes and watch his Friday's weekly review with Mark Shields on PBS, so I had some idea of his 'style' before I made the purchase of this book. I wouldn't say it's fast-reading and enjoy the people that he selected. I can tell the author spent a lot of time researching all the biographical info, and the stories are fun to read, sometimes painful though. Very often do I sense that Brooks took over the 'voice' of the person he intended to write about and he kept it consistent, so that the reader can feel that this is all the same person. Insightful and thought-provoking for sure. Worth the reading for anyone above high school age.

Truly amazing book. I have bought extra copies for people and have recommended it to even more. He brings to light the difference between the culture we live in and the attributes that make life truly meaningful by highlighting our focus on resume virtues vs. the eulogy virtues. This book makes you want to go out and tell the world our culture is going the wrong direction. We need to be teaching our children there is more to life than making money, it's about developing a good character.
