Review

"This is the best book on acting written in the last twenty years." --from the introduction by David Mamet"Simple, clear and consise--just what was needed. A deeply interesting and valuable piece of work." --Sidney Lumet"This terse and lucid handbook might well be for the actor what Strunk and White's The Elements of Style is for the writer." --John Guare"This book is wonderful. It is clear, direct, and to the point, with none of the hokum that accompanies most books on the theatre, especially about acting. I learned an enormous amount." --Robert Benton"This beautifully written book offers a clear guide to the most profound acting technique I  know. Every young actor should read it, re-read it, and then keep it under his pillow." --Lindsay Crouse

I read lots of books about acting but none of them was concise, up to the point and real summary. This book byitself is enough to give you all the information about the acting. It explains a great technique which really helps a lot on the stage. It also explains how to apply this technique in different conditions, with different directors, actors, methods. It has also troubleshooting page for many different use cases/scenarios. It should be really "under the pillow" book for anyone who is into acting

As a university student of Fine Arts, this book was assigned to me by my acting professor. As soon as I began working from it, this book went from a textbook, to. Staple of my collection almost instantly. I went from a supporting actor that few audience members remembered, to the president and director of our student theatre organization, and this book, in large part, is to thank for that. It walks you through explanations of acting terms and devices that are easy for anyone to understand, and well as some history of the development of acting and theatre. It's a very easy, yet comprehensive read that is guaranteed to boost your performances to new heights. I would very highly recommend this book to both aspiring and professional actors alike. This book has something valuable to teach anyone who is willing to read it.

I truly enjoyed this beauty, it packs a lot of tips, wisdom, advice, etc... within an seemingly small text. Of course, you should also pay close attention to your other resources (i.e. your instincts, prior training) but this is great if you can't get to certain resources, or pay for this, whatever. As many other reviewers has mentioned this book does break down constant techniques and turn them from complicated to understandable. I'm relatively new to the "acting realm" mainly because I'm just now getting back into auditions, monologues and what accompanies that. I'm more of the jack-of-all-trades kind of girl, because I love to write, create music, sing, produce, direct, and of course acting, but through it all when I wasn't getting any auditions, blah, blah I ended up just sliding away from acting, but still having that same love for it. I needed something else quick, that I could afford and could keep with me on regular while learning more than what I originally knew with having some sensible tips on issue I was suffering on. This book was it, I suggest you read it, because it'll definitely come in high regard.

In an age where many America acting coaches won't push much further than helping actors with 60-second auditions, this is the real deal. Highly recommended for someone serious about the language of theater and film. How to make a deeper connection to the heart of a great story. This book explores the difference between those who think acting is pretending to look like a person who is feeling something -- and those who feel the job is based in real actions.

I am a firm believer that there is no one "right" way to be an actor. However, I *do* think that actors should expose themselves to many different schools of thought and find what works for them. So whether you are a Meisnerian, a Stanislavski-ite, or a Hagenist, you owe it to yourself to read this. It is what I would call "de-constructionist" acting technique -- breaking things down to their essential elements of action and intent. I was never able to get my mind around some of the more esoteric elements of other acting methods, but this one made sense to me. You may also want to read "True and False" by David Mamet, as it provides some of the philosophical underpinnings for this approach to acting.

Awesome wisdom in this book for a young actor.

I didn't find it terribly useful as a fiction writer.

This was a required book for my Theater class. Really glad I bought it. Goes into the mentality of acting, great introduction for someone who doesn't really know that much from before.

Review

“His finest-tuned tale yet. . . . There is a deep, satisfying music to this book, as Haruf weaves between such a large cast of characters in so small a space. . . . Strangely, wonderfully, the moment of a man's passing can be a blessing in the way it brings people together. Benediction recreates this powerful moment so gracefully it is easy to forget that, like [the town of] Holt, it is a world created by one man.” —John Freeman, The Boston Globe"A quiet and profound statement about endings, about change and death and endurance, and about the courage it takes to finally let go. . . . What's remarkable is Haruf's ability, once again, to square quotidian events with what it means to be alive and bound in ordinary pleasure with ordinary people [with] a matter-of-fact tone, with spare declarative sentences and plain-speak among the characters that is, in its bare-bones clarity, often heartbreakingly authentic."  —Debra Gwartney, The Oregonian“What Haruf makes of this patch of ground is magic [and] Benediction spreads its blessing over the entire town.  Haruf isn’t interested in evil so much as the frailties that defeat us – loneliness, a failure to connect with one another, the lack of courage to change. . . . [He] makes us admire his characters’ ability not only to carry on but also to enjoy simple pleasures.” —Dan Cryer, San Francisco Chronicle“We’ve waited a long time for an invitation back to Holt, home to Kent Haruf’s novels. . . He may be the most muted master in American fiction [and] Benediction seems designed to catch the sound of those fleeting good moments [with] scenes Hemingway might have written had he survived.” —Ron Charles, Washington Post"A lovely book, surprisingly rich in character and event without any sense of being crowded. . . . Haruf is a master in summing up the drama that already exists in life, if you just pay attention." —Harper Barnes, St. Louis Post-Dispatch“Absorbing [and] evocative. . . . Haruf doesn’t offer us any facile reconciliations. The blessings in Benediction are [not] easily won. For that very reason they are all the more believable and all the more unforgettable.” – Richard Wakefield, The Seattle Times"Splendid. . . . As the expertly crafted structure of Benediction emerges, it becomes clear that [Haruf's many] characters trace the arc of a life. . . as we join [a good but flawed man] in his deepening appreciation for those around him, while counting down the remaining hours, in his life and our own." —Mike Fischer, Portland Press Herald“Remarkable. . . . Haruf paints indelible portraits of drifting days that reveal unexpected blessings. . . . We may not always recognize the best moments—maybe because they are often as simple as eating off the good china at a backyard picnic—but he understands their power to make us human.” —Connie Ogle, The Miami Herald"Itself a blessing. . . spare and unencumbered. . . . Haruf's great skill is in describing the plain ways of people who live in small places [and the war] going on between good and evil that we recognize as part of our nature. This is what makes Benediction a universal story, not a hometown tale." —Michael D. Langan, The Buffalo News“Quiet, and intimate, and beautiful.” —Lisa McLendon, The Wichita Eagle “If Hemingway had had more soul, he would've written a book like Benediction.” —Emma Broder, The Chicago Maroon"Incisive, elegiac, and rhetorically rich. . . his finest expression yet of an aesthetic vision that, in spite of its exacting verisimilitude, achieves a mythic dimension rare in contemporary fiction. . . . Haruf's art is rigorous but transparent. Scene after scene, we appreciate that we are in the hands of a master of complex storytelling disguised as simple observation. . . . Reading [him], I am often reminded of the great Russian realists, who have a similar compressed intensity and who spent much of their writing time examining the lives of ordinary people living in small communities in wide-open spaces." —Kevin Stevens, The Dublin Review of Books“Benediction suggests there’s no end to the stories Haruf can tell about Holt or to the tough, gorgeous language he can summon in the process.” —Paul Elie, The New York Times Book Review “Haruf is the master of what one of his characters calls 'the precious ordinary'. . . . With understated language and startling emotional insight, he makes you feel awe at even the most basic of human gestures.” —Ben Goldstein, Esquire“Grace and restraint are abiding virtues in Haruf's fiction, and they resume their place of privilege in his new work. . . . For readers looking for the rewards of an intimate, meditative story, it is indeed a blessing.” —Karen R. Long, The Cleveland Plain Dealer“Haruf is maguslike in his gifts. . . to illuminate the inevitable ways in which tributary lives meander toward confluence. . . . Perhaps not since Hemingway has an American author triggered such reader empathy with so little reliance on the subjectivity of his characters. . . . [This] is a modestly wrought wonder from one of our finest living writers.” —Bruce Machart, The Houston Chronicle“Both sad and surprisingly uplifting in its honest and skillful examination of death, families and friendship.” —Jason Swensen, Deseret News“As Haruf's precise details accrue, a reader gains perspective: This is the story of a man's life, and the town where he spent it, and the people who try to ease its end. . . . His sentences have the elegance of Hemingway's early work [and his] determined realism, which admits that not all of our past actions or the reasons behind them are knowable, even to ourselves, is one of the book's satisfactions.” —John Reimringer, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune“Reverberant… From the terroir and populace of his native American West, the author of Plainsong and Eventide again draws a story elegant in its simple telling and remarkable in its authentic capture of universal human emotions.” – Brad Hooper, Booklist

In the first page "Dad" Lewis learns his cancer can't be stopped. We watch him reflect on some key relationships as he fades. Although there is death and broken relationships in the first two books of the Plain Song trilogy, this last book is the darkest.

"By the beginning of September the dirt would be piled over what was leftof him out at the cemetery three miles east of town, Someone would cut his name into the face of a tombstone and it would be as if he nevel was." [p 5]
In Plainsong and Eventide we mostly see people who have chances at relationship with others and take them - or at least move toward the new. Dad won't be able to do that. His one true love, his wife was his luck and allowed him to build a better life after leaving an abusive home as a young teen. The husband and wife relationship is all we expect from the Kent Haruf novels. Even though she ends up in the hospital with exhaustion, she walks away and miles back home to take care of her dying husband.Although everyone calls him "Dad" he hasn't always been the loving dad - but more the stern dad. Talking with his daughter, Lorraine we see the situation in a nutshell.
You know how much they think of you.Well, I think a lot of them too. But they never say much, do they, They never say much to me.You don't let people, Daddy. You never have. You think that's what it is?Yes, I do. [p 160]
Like the other two books in the series we also get looks into the lives of other inhabitants of Holt, Colorado; many of whom have parallel struggles: mother and daughter Alene; the little girl Alice across the street, and the the new minister and his troubled family. Some take the opportunity for relationship regardless of the cost; others pass.In the three novels, Haruf urges us to take chances on opening our hearts with other people. In the two earlier stories the McPheron brothers opened their lives to Victoria and her daughter; later Raymond McPheron finds romantic love. Dad Lewis found love and luck with his wife but unfortunately not in some of the other big relationship events in his life. We do see him trying to change; which is hopeful.Benediction is a nice counterpoint to the other two novels. I don't recommend starting here; work your way through the series from the start.

Holt, Colorado, is a very ordinary little town invented by Haruf for the setting of his three novels Plainsong, Eventide and Benediction. It’s the kind of sleepy, unattractive little place that we have all read about in literature and seen portrayed in endless films; the kind of place, in real life, you just couldn’t wait to get away from. And yet, this is what makes Haruf’s work so exceptional. He has the ability to make the ordinary into something completely extraordinary and creates a fictional place that you just can’t wait to get back to.Benediction tells the story of one long, hot summer in Holt, when Dad Lewis returns from hospital with terminal cancer. He has come home to die which he duly does at the end of the novel. That’s it. That’s the story and yet I don’t think I’ve read anything recently that kept me so avidly turning the pages. Alongside the very sad story of Dad’s decline there are sub-plots which are completely uplifting, for example Dad’s next door neighbour takes in Alice, her orphaned eight-year-old granddaughter, and the rather shell-shocked child gradually grows in confidence as she is befriended by a group of older women.Haruf’s characters are uncompromisingly true to life. These are the folk you might expect to meet in typical small town America – conventional and small-minded with a tough outlook born of poverty and grinding hard work. Even the central character, Dad Lewis, upright citizen though he may be, is not likeable. His uncompromising moral standards have caused him to sack an employee who stole money from him, leading ultimately to the man’s suicide and his wife and children facing a life of desperate poverty. He has also alienated his son because he cannot cope with the fact that his offspring is homosexual. And yet, in all Hanuf’s characters, there are such flashes of courage and compassion that you are left feeling optimistic rather than depressed by the state of mankind. Dad Lewis, in penance for his over-hasty judgement, financially supports his ex-employee’s wife and children for years. The same folk who turn their back on Reverend Lyle for preaching that the United States should “turn the other cheek” instead of going to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, turn out en masse to hunt for a missing child. Hanuf makes you care about his characters, despite their flaws and I, for one, want to go back there to find out how life works out for Alice as she grows up and whether Lorraine does take over the hardware store.Haruf’s style of writing is deceptively simple; he uses no imagery and his characters’ conversation is plain and natural, the ordinariness emphasised by the lack of quotation marks. This simplicity of style serves to make even more memorable certain scenes, such as the women’s baptism-like skinny dipping in the cattle’s stock tank or the terrifying account of the minister’s son attempting to hang himself. These are dramatic scenes, loaded with symbolic significance but it is Hanuf’s accounts of very ordinary events that make his work so powerful. Reverend Lyle goes out wandering the town looking for what he calls “the precious ordinary” in the lives of the townspeople of Holt and, at the end of the novel, the reader is left with a sense of being given an exceptional gift in being allowed access to their unexceptional lives.

Received, many thanks! Item as described.

interesting though not analytic philosophy and so a tad conceptually sloppy

I'm teaching this year in New Orleans, but I'm new to the area since the initial season of distress. I have, however, learned a great deal from my new colleagues as well as my neighbors-- people from diverse social milieus and ideologies-- and if I have gained at least one insight from them all, it is the growing indistinction between natural and man-made disasters, and the potential feedback between forms of injustice and misfortune in the wake of Katrina. This very point seemed provocative when it was made by the late political theorist Judith Shklar in her "Faces of Injustice" (Yale University Press, 1990), collected from her Storrs Lectures of 1988. This short book is a favorite of mine to re-read, and it seems more prophetic every time I read it, though to many residents of New Orleans it would seem uncontroversial. Shklar uses the public response to the Lisbon earthquake to illustrate how people who once regarded certain kinds of suffering as misfortunes, "acts of God," came to view them as injustices-caused by the action or inaction of the powerful."Someone simply must be blamed to maintain the unquenchable belief in a rational world, but the exculpation of God has not made it easier to know whom to accuse. Nor has it helped us to decide which of our travails are due to injustice and which are misfortunes. When can we blame others and when is our pain a matter of natural necessity or just bad luck? . . . . The very distinction betweeninjustice and misfortune can sometimes be mischievous . . . .On the border between misfortune and injustice we must deal with the victim as best we can, without asking on which side her case falls."When the horror stories of Hurricane Katrina New Orleans and the Gulf Coast gave way to a surge of criticism of Federal disaster preparedness; the Bush Administration seemed prepared at least for one aspect of this disaster: the spin. It's not that there weren't people on the other side already poised to find fault with the Administration's handling of the crisis, but the White House was already set to shape the discourse on disaster? President Bush stated and his partisans followed in chorus over the next several days? They weren't going to play the "blame game." Shklar says: "In mature democracies, planning to minimize the harm of natural disasters or contain their consequences has become institutionalized." Government responsibility models for us civic responsibility, and Even if God is not available for our blame, there are still responsible agents, and in our society we have a duty to protect, a duty to warn, a duty to prevent, a duty not to contribute to harm, not to make worse. And if this is not pushing too far in the direction of Europe and Vermont, perhaps even a duty to rescue. It has now been a year since the Bush Administration spun the phrase the "blame game," suggesting that these disasters by their nature, by their connection to nature, are conversation stoppers, they are acts of god, and unless we are going to engage in Theodicy (putting God on trial) the buck stops there. In the context of stuttering on and off laissez-faire government, the Bush Administration responded in the context of the times, and the only question is the quality of the response. If the Hoover Administration's handling of droughts served as a model for the Roosevelt Administration to handle an economic crisis on the scale of a natural disaster, the government itself has had to adapt to changing notions of responsibility and responsiveness. By placing FEMA (a four letter word in New Orleans) in the Department of Homeland Security, the Administration follows in the tradition of ambivalent interventionists.

I purchased this for my 7 year old who is in second grade (homeschool). He really loves the workbook and wants to do all the activities for the week in one sitting. The words are not too hard. I can easily see him finishing and moving on to the third grade level before finishing second grade. Each week has a spelling tip/rule which the words fall under. For those who would like to know. . . the words in the first lesson are fox, cut hill, wind, put, all moon, saw, tell, new (which seem very easy for 2nd grade). Week thirty-five's words are hole, whole, no, know, not, knot, ate eight, to, too, two, right, write, one, won. I think our local public schools did these type of words in 1st grade. My son did not have "formal" spelling last year so I don't mind starting him off with easier words. I've found it is better to start easy and build confidence than to ruin a child's self-esteem with something too hard. I do believe; however, that if your child has already had formal spelling it would be easy to move on to level C and skip level B.I have tried many spelling programs over the years (with my oldest son) and my children rate this one as the best. It has interesting activities such as crossword puzzles, find the missing letters, proofreading, etc. My favorite part is that each week the child has a short story to read that uses all of the week's spelling words. The stories are usually educational too! If your child enjoys short activities to reinforce what he/she is learning, I believe you will find this program a perfect fit.

My [..] daughter who is weak in spelling did not enjoy this book. We used the book as extra spelling practice. Because of her reluctance, it took 2-3 times as long to complete the work. It was a challenge to make it thru the entire book. That said, it was effective and her spelling did improve as a result of using this book. The word lists were arranged by phonics which gave her a clue as to how to spell the words, esp. those with different vowel blends for the long vowel sounds. I felt the last page of each unit where you write your own sentence was a little advanced and disjoint from the rest of the exercises. While writing isn't her best subject either, I felt that asking her to spell words not just introduced to make sentences while trying to learn how to spell words was a bit much.Since spelling isn't her best subject, I got several different books for her to practice with. Evan-Moor's Building Spelling Skills is excellent and quite effective. She has also enjoyed School Special Publishing Master Skills Series Spelling and Writing. In the Master Skills book the last page of each unit was a fun activity like a cross-word puzzle, word-find or free-form sentence. For some reason, she doesn't balk about doing these sentences like she did with the Spelling Workout.

I use these for my homeschooled kids. Letter corresponds to grade. Love that they start showing the lists in cursive as well as script. Then in the upper grades it's mostly cursive. Whether or not a child can Write cursvie, this will at least get them more used to Reading cursive. A little section at the end encourages the student to write a few sentences in response to a question. A plus in my book.

We did every level of Spelling Workout for two kids for homeschool. The result is I have two kids who can spell better than I can. This book is no frills, no nonsense. Words are grouped in logical sets of similar words, not like the bizarre and seemingly random "word lists" that my kids' friends would drag home from public school. Each chapter is arranged in a way that made it really easy for me to keep track of where we were to finish the book by the end of our "school" year, and also to divide the lesson up through the week. We usually did it in three chunks, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. With black and white newsprint like pages and simple illustrations, it's not the prettiest spelling book ever, but it gets the job done.

This curriculum works well for us. Not everyone may be looking for the same things; but, we like:-The variety exercises that come with each spelling list-The simplicity of instruction-The organization of spelling 'rules' that each list is based on.Dislikes:-Each spelling list could use some more explanation of the spelling 'rules' for each list (ex: long vowel sound when word ends with 'e')-Writing exercise provides to small a space (we just use a separate sheet of paper)Note: There is a fair amount of writing, if your child struggles with handwriting you may want to adapt some of the exercises.

I teach grades 1-4 and use this curriculum. The kids are able to work independently which is very helpful in a multigrade classroom. I wish there was a placement test as I had 3 students this year begin in their grade level and then end up needing to go up a grade or two in these books. I make a photo copy of the take home word list, onto card stock and then cut out each list and laminate them for the kids. These lists are printed and in alphabetical order. This helps the students that have a harder time reading the cursive writing in the workbooks. I like this curriculum and will continue to use it for my classroom. It goes through grade 8, which allows me to use higher books for my advanced spellers.

This Series is based on the "memorize the spelling words for the test on Friday" rather than know the "rules so you can always figure it out". I don't really like it since the child often (I know I did) forgets the words a month later. Poor process in my opinion.

We homeschool and we've relied on Spelling Workout for the last couple of years. We have tried other spelling books but this is the easiest and overall the best. We go through them fairly quickly. 1 lesson per day versus per week which is how some other's have used it.

The story started a little slow but picked up as it went on. Definitely for younger readers and not that long of a read. Builds on the last story which had a little better plot than this one but still worth the read if you liked the first book.

Too much "Harry Potter" kind of stuff. Requires too great, suspension of disbelief. Not nearly up to the Hangman's Daughter series. I do not know to whom I might recommend this yarn.Oliver Potzsch is, nonetheless, an excellent writer.

I gave this a 4-star rating, just because I'm not so much into the "magical" aspect of the story. I love this author's depth in the historical aspects of his stories. I went onto Google Earth to look at the places he referenced and looked into the history of those places. It's stories like his that make me interested enough to look further into the history of what he writes about.

Oliver P. Writes great books, wonderful imafry, excellent characters, great dialogue. Thus book is no exception. A winderful addition to the Black Musketeers series, and I hope the next book is published soon.

I LOVE any books by Oliver Potzsch. He is absolutely my most favorite author. I love how he weaves actual historical facts into a wonderful, hard-to put-down book. The story is a great read and it always amazes me how he can create a very believable, thrilling, suspenseful story around fact. I only wish I could send him a personal note telling him how much I enjoy his work! Thanks Oliver!

I love this author. If you are in the mood for knights in shining armor combined with a dash of magic and a damsel in distress you will like this book.

I'm a big Oliver Poetsch fan. His Hangman daughter series is fantastic. I enjoyed the Black Musketeers and the Sword of Power was okay. I think this one suffered a little in translation and also trying to appeal to a broader audience.

This is well-written young-adult fiction. The context is engaging. This is a good fun-read for adults as well. It is worth the time spent.

I have been a fan of Louis L'amour for many years now. When I came across this collection of short stories by him, I thought I would read them. Now one thing about Louis L'amour stories is that sometimes you will have read a book that was originally a short story not knowing it started life as a short story and then come across the short story in a collection of short stories and go what the heck. But that is what I like about them you get a chance to the original idea he had for the story. Like. I said I am a fan of Louis L'amour and I enjoyed reading some old stories by an old favorite. These are stories worth reading again and again.

I have read many, many of L'Amour's books but I think his short stories are the best. You can get in and out quickly and, sometime with his longer books, they tend to be formulaic. So, anytime I can get a book of his short stories, I grab them and read them over and over again. They're like old friends.

I love L'Amour stories and I think I like the short stories best. They are so crisp, sharp, right to the point but complete. These are all terrific short stories. I've read them often but still enjoy them. L'Amour is a treasure.

I have always been a fan of Louis L'Amour and enjoyed this book of short stories. I haven't read anything by him in decades and was a little surprised by how much the world has changed since then. When I was a kid, the 'wild west' didn't seen that long ago and now it feels very far away. This was a nice interlude into the past and a completely different world of the 'cowboy way' of life.

If you are a Louie L`Amour fan you have probably already read these short stories. They are all good ones and any one who likes western stories will enjoy these. I don't know if these six stories have been grouped together before. If you have never read anything by Louie before I am sure these stories will make you want more.

I haven't read Louis L'Amour in years other than to re-read some of his books. I hadn't read these shorts but recognised some of his later books that stretched these stories out. It was like old times when I could a read Louis L'Amour for the first time.

Back in the fifties, the formula was the good guy got the girl in the end (actually it's still the formula). Louis L'Amour book is faithful to that formula. While woman were not well developed, in the fifties that's the way stories read. Enjoyed it.

Fun, fun, fun!! Have an extra hour? Read these great short stories by one of the best weaver of tales of the old west, Louis L'Amour! If you love tall tales where the good guy always wins you will be enchanted!

I bought this book already knowing I would love it. Savy and I were in grad school together and I have been an avid reader of her stories/essays since we met. Her children's book series "The Furever Home Friends" is sweet and smart and Savy presents her progressive worldview in a way that keeps readers/listeners at the edge of their seats. As the editor in chief of DePaul's literary magazine, I was happy to be able to publish one of Savy's short stories in our 2018 magazine and even more happy to present her with an award at our launch party that year. The crowd hung on every word of her reading of her vibrant, intelligent, and young main character (a junior-high student with an opinion that can't be tamed and scoliosis), so I knew Sculpt Yourself would be just as good, if not better. Savy's ability to compassionately write about people in the minority, people with disability, and generally people who don't fit the status-quo or are underprivileged, is a great gift, and one that will make her an inspired author in all her future endeavors. Savy is a true voice of the millennial generations of ambitious future leaders.Focusing on three very different young women, with vastly differing opinions on the fictional drug "Lipamorph", Sculpt Yourself addresses issues of body-image, what it means to be a "drug user", and most importantly what it means to have ownership of your body and what it means to be a feminist in the 21st-century. Though each woman in this story might have a different opinion, they all agree that rich white-male politicians/influencers shouldn't be making that decision for them.I read this book very quickly, I couldn't put it down! I also gifted a second copy to my sister for her 15th birthday, so far she is very impressed!

What I really liked about Sculpt Yourself was how unique it was, like it's sort of a thinking novel in a sense. I feel as each year passes by, our society becomes more and more consumed by beauty. What's the next step? How can I alter myself more to reflect the perfect version of myself?Whatever happened to being happy with the way your are and accept yourself for your flaws? Makeup is great. I love fun eye shadow, but now, even with makeup, it's gooped and plopped on with so much foundation. In this Texas heat it would melt right off! Plastic surgery? That's where things have gone too far, and it's not hard to believe that something like this in the book could happen one day.Sculpt Yourself has a great cast of characters. It was character driven and they felt real, like people I could know in real life. They all had their flaws, as we all do. Because no one is perfect and no one can be. Whoever came up with the idea of perfect is a moron. Besides thinking about things, there was a twist along the way that was nice! I kind of wished the book had been written in third person since it had three main POVs, but that's not a big deal. Overall, this book had great diversity, writing, snarkiness, emotion, and all kinds of things to think about, even after finishing! This is the second book I've read by the author that needs to be made into a movie!

Sculpt yourself gives off sorry to bother you vibes. It’s full of plenty of pop culture references to keep you pinned in current reality but with a twist. It’s very heavy handed with its commentary on contemporary beauty standards, daily stress of balancing a work and social life, handling of insecurities, obesity, eating disorders (binge eating), drug use etc.I’m a big fan of seeing the story told from three points of view, it gives a complete picture on the reality in the book; I also think it’s smart to have multiple POVs when it comes to a topic like body image because so many people deal with it in so many ways. It also helped create tension because (without giving away spoilers) you know about characters they choose to hide from others. It’s a low sci-fi (I think that’s the term), commentary piece. I enjoyed reading it. I like the authors YouTube videos on it. I recommend it.

The distinct voices of the three narrators in Sculpt Yourself are immediately engaging, carry diverse points of view, and all manage to coexist in a loving way. Such a refreshing look at how people can get along and support a greater cause despite differences in points of view. Sculpt yourself pulls the reader in from the first page with voice, then layers in important perspectives and issues society's been facing for a long, long time, but today seems to tackle with more vigor and persistence. This is a great pick for YA and up. Book clubs, you will have plenty to talk about! Sculpt Yourself is highly recommended!
