Excellent book. At first I thought it was too basic, but I was wrong. Great info and really great illustrations. Highly recommend it.

About a year ago, I acquired large tracts of land in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Much of this land is forested and I, someone with no background in land management needed to learn. This book taught me vast amounts of knowledge about forest ecology and management. I now feel that my land is in responsible hands.

Excellent book. It's not meant for specifics, as every property is different, but it really provides you a basic background in ecology, finances, and dendrology. It really helps get the gears of land management working in your brain. This book is geared to the upper Midwest, especially Wisconsin woodlands.

I received the hardcover books today (prime shipping). I also picked up the problem book. As a basis for comparison, I used the 1966 edition that I also own. I picked up the new set as FLP set are among some of my most favorite physics books and I wanted to own it in a relatively error free version. I read the FLP long ago and now wanted to read it again using the new edition.Here is my assessment of the quality of printing of the new Millennium edition putting is side by side with the 1966 edition.The binding is quite nice and the books are good looking. The pages are not glossy at all but the quality of paper is not great. The print however is not good at all. The letters are 'thin' and rickety and harder to read compared to the original red edition that has nice thick bold black letters printed. They are readable if direct light is shining on them, however, they do cause eye strain and require effort to read. All FLPs (old and new editions) have a lot of room on the right margin and this is nothing new. However, the left margin for the Millennium edition is too close to the spine making it awkward to read. The pictures are however, nicely done and so are the math, the formulas, and the equations. In short, the printing of the Millennium edition does not do justice to the excellent content. My advice for People who are contemplating purchasing the new millennium edition is to skip it and try to acquire one of the older versions in good condition and deal with the errata online. I have not decided yet whether to keep mine or send it back. I love FLP but the printing quality of the Millennium edition does leave a bad taste in mouth. I completed my last Physics class in 1964, and I still go back to these lectures from time to time simply because they're a joy to read.OK, I'll admit I spent 35 years developing system software and I have a life long love of math and science, but I think these lectures are accessible to anyone who wants to actually understand what physics is all about. Dr. Feynman is able to present the concepts in a way that gets past the "here's the formula, memorize it" approach that many introductory presentations have been reduced to. If you persist, you will be rewarded with an understanding of how all those odd sounding bits fit together and at least some idea of how it all works.Taking on these three volumes is a daunting task, but if you truly want to grasp this material, you won't find a shorter or easier path to getting there. You can read all kinds of popularizations relating to the voodoo of quantum mechanics, the time twisting of relativity, and the unfathomability of the smallest and the largest scales of the universe, but if you want to glimpse the reality behind the magic you need to recognize that a lot of very, very smart people have spent the past few hundred years sorting it out. The fact that all this can be made comprehensible to us mere mortals at all is a major accomplishment.

Of course the substantive content is beyond reproach, but it remains a challenging read, regardless of one's educational background.However, if you are reading the Feynman Lectures with Kindle for the iPad, be aware you will be disappointed in the formatting -- when inline mathematical expressions are rendered, these formulas are not properly displayed. Speaking with the editor of the Feynman Lectures, he informs me that Amazon has not updated the Kindle software for the iPad to support the newer mobi standard (or Amazon delivers the old .mobi version to iPads instead of the newer .mobi standard?). He informs me that publishers generally are complaining to Amazon about this problem for some time.

The following comments are general to the entire Feynman Lectures on Physics set : Volumes 1, 2 & 3Prosody, philosophy and physics. Autodidacts and self-starters will be pleased.The layout is well-crafted, the language is timeless (not archaic, despite being written a half-century ago), and the development (exposition) of the content is arranged to accommodate "cover-to-cover" study, intermittent consumption, or to serve as reference. In fact, some Lectures (chapters) point to previous Lectures "for review" - helpful if you want to start from the middle.Though pre-exposure to- (or familiarity with- ) Calculus (particularly integral), Vector analysis, Probability, and other mathematical disciplines, operations/transformations/functions/series (Lorentz, Fourier, Number Theories, etc.) may help "feel out" the proofs more intuitively, each is presented with its corresponding Physical principle, as the need arises.In fact, this reviewer finds the coverage of mathematics (which contains many proofs) to be as lucid and well-reasoned as the Physics content!For putting together a working knowledge of Physics, in the pursuit of other interests, this reviewer continues to be excited by the lessons in these books.No doubt they will be admired by many other audiences, too.Then of course, no thing is for everyone. It gets deep quickly, and may be more thorough than some folks need or want. It's an overview in some sense, but the methodology is intense and takes a LOT OF MATH. Be sure you know what you're buying before you get into it!Happy reads

You know something is terribly wrong when everyone who comments on a debate -- including the debaters themselves, subsequently -- think the debate sucked. It is obvious why to almost everyone: theist and atheist alike. The two men, with J.P. Moreland representing the Christian side and Kai Nielsen representing the atheistic side, couldn't be more dissimilar in terms of both their intellectual priorities and debating styles. The result of this is that the two men completely talk past one-another. As one of the theistic commentators noted (Craig), one of the most fundamental elements of a good debate, clash, or the head-to-head, back-and-forth treatment of various common points, is entirely missing from this. It almost reads like someone spliced together arguments from entirely different debates. I would also agree with Craig that this is largely Nielsen's fault: he put all of his eggs in one basket, and refused to address any of the points raised by Moreland. He talks, almost with pride, about how he just doesn't give a hoot about the historical Christian proofs of Jesus Christ's resurrection. Now, I think almost all of Moreland's arguments, from his arcane cosmological argument to his statistical arguments to his scientific arguments (interesting how theists are quick to invoke scientific theories which support their position even as they attack other theories which are at least as well-established by evidence), are poor stuff. However, he at least supplies Nielsen with an ample amount of material to cover in their debate. Nielsen refuses to engage Moreland, however, and keeps on his incoherency argument, which, while I think essentially valid, is poorly presented by him. As if this wasn't bad enough, I also share Moreland's irritation with Nielsen's thoroughly dismissive attitude toward science. No, scientific models will never attain the level of certainty found in logical or mathematical proofs, but they are still the best we have to work with and, indeed, given the wide-range of evidence for, say, the big bang theory, which is the theory invoked by Moreland, it is unimaginable that this theory is flat out wrong. In all likelihood as we learn more it'll be revised to incorporate new discoveries, but given the power and likely permanence of the theory, it is intellectual irresponsible to dismiss it out of hand as Nielsen does here. Nielsen comes off as an arrogant and thoroughly obnoxious intellectual lightweight who has refused to do his homework.Other contributions are better. Namely, Keith Parsons and Dallas Willard. Willard presents impressive philosophical arguments in favor of supernaturalism, and completely wipes the floor of Craig and Moreland, who rely on poor scientific and metaphysical arguments. Parsons takes on Moreland's points head-first, pointing out hidden assumptions and bad premises in his opponent's arguments. He is also scientifically literate, and devastates Moreland's argument concerning abiogenesis (which is really Fred Hoyle's argument). Flew's contribution isn't terrible, but it left me cold. It is, however, superior to Craig's contribution.I give this book two stars for some decent commentary by Parsons and Willard, but I won't suggest purchasing this book just for their pieces, since their contributions make up a very small proportion of the total page-space employed. Otherwise, this book stinks, because the debate stunk.

I should preface this by saying that I am, in fact, a theist.That said, I thought that the *theist* position was very poorly represented. Moreland and Craig's arguments were simply bad philosophy. There was the occasional good point here and there, but on the whole, there were so many holes that even I, an amateur, could have picked them out. Fortunately, Neilsen did an excellent job of riping their arguments to shreds. I found this very intellectually interesting, as it this exchange really illustrated the common standards of a good philosophical argument.Flew and Parson's arguments were also not so great, but still better than Moreland's. Fortunately, Willard's piece (one of the theists) was simply excellent. He too pointed out the numerous issues with Moreland's argument, and even Neilsen complemented him on his argument. In fact, Neilen commented that a debate between he and Willard would have been far more fruitful, and I wholeheartedly agree. (I would likely not hesitate to give such a work a 5-star rating, assuming they found some better arguers than Moreland and Craig to round out the work.)In general, I do recommend reading this book, because it's useful to see how one should *not* argue, and what does make a good argument. (Of course, a sophisticated philosopher may find this all very tedious, in which case they should probably simply read the individual works of Neilsen and Willard.) In my opinion, the quality of Neilsen and Willard's arguments do make up for the rest of the arguments. Craig's arguments are interesting, though, in my opinion, untenable.On the whole, I'm surprised to see that other reviewers thought that the theists won--I thought the atheists won! On the theist side, there was only one philosopher worth his salt, while all the atheists were generally quite good. (Though, I should say, I was not very impressed with Flew's arguments, as presented here. I'm not familiar with his other work, which I assume is much better, given his esteemed status in the philosophical community.) I was also very intellectually disappointed in Moreland and Craig, especially because I myself am a theist. They are very clearly allowing their beliefs to cloud their arguments, and they seem blind to the many fallacies they are promulgating. In fact, they give theist philosophers a bad name. (Without Willard's piece, in fact, I would simply not have recommended this work.)So, in conclusion, I think this is a good work, but could have been much better.

This book is a written version of the debate between J.P. Moreland and Kia Nielsen. Both men are well known in their respective fields. Moreland a Christian theist and Nielsen an Atheist, "duke it out" and try to convince us if there is or is not a God. Even though I like J.P. Moreland, and he clearly wins the debate, he isn't at his top form. Further, Nielsen is sloppy and presents an old and already disgarded argument.The strength of this book are the contributors: Lane Craig and Willard (Christians) and Flew and Parsons (Atheists) right good strong rebuttals. They all write their position with dynamic passion. I'm partial to William Lane Craig in this book, but must admit that all the contributers did a fine job and therefore, make this book a must read.

At first I thought I wasted my money, that was because the book starts out in the beginning, and gives a lot of basic training on Arduino. After I got past the first 100 pages things started to get more interesting for me. The book is a great way to get into Arduino, and it will not only introduce you to Arduino, it will help make you a good programmer, and learn to do some pretty useful things with Arduino. The book has lots of projects that start out very basic, and go all the way up to putting your arduino on the internet and sending tweets from it. The book does not just toss the programs out for you to copy, it explains the process used to complete each project. The book is laid out very well. In most projects, he starts by explaining the goal, as in what he is going to teach you with the current project, then is outlines the hardware used in a hardware list, then the schematic where he explains what is done and why, then the program, where he explains each line of code so you can put it all together in your head. The book leads to firm understanding for the student. If you want to use this book as a study aid to learn the most, you should start by getting a quiet place to work, get all the parts used in the book, and start reading. I have a lot of books on Arduino, but this one is by far one of the very best.

This is a great introduction to Arduino and the family of devices that bear that name. The author goes into great detail on alot of projects. I think one of the things I like best about this book is that the author does not have a chapter or two specifically on the C programming language. Instead, he introduces the C language in small bits and always in the context of how you use it to achieve a design goal.The book also covers how to integrate with a wide variety of electronic devices and different Andruino shields. I only wish it covered the WiFi shields. It does cover the ethernet shields and the cellular shields though, so I'm sure I can figure out the WiFi and Bluetooth from the content of this book. I highly recommend this book.

I have never worked with an Arduino let alone having almost no experience with reading schematics for electronics. Though I wish there was a little more explanation on how the schematics translate onto a breadboard (hence the 4/5 stars) I think this is a great tool for beginners. I've been working my way through the book, and have so far made working buttons that turn on LEDs to more complicated circuits like simulating a traffic light. I would advise anyone picking up this book to get a decent Arduino starter kit (with stuff like resistors, input buttons, LEDs, etc.) since most of the time the local Radioshack is either A.) out of business or B.) doesn't have the right parts.The book also teaches you the basics (and the more complicated syntax/commands) of Arduino's programming language. Essentially, you get the fundamental building blocks of knowing exactly how to talk to your Arduino. It's exciting, especially as a person new to programming and circuits, to be able to manipulate digital inputs/outputs and work with electricity.Aside from wanting a little more when it comes to reading schematics (it does tell you what the symbols mean) this is a great book for beginners.

Many of the Arduino books focus on creating a project with just a little bit of information about how it actually works. This book sheds light on how the Arduino works and has projects that build on one another (much better to do that than create a project, take it apart, then create a new, even more complex, project from scratch!) In addition, he covers fundamentals in electricity and how to read electrical diagrams which is a key area where the other books I've purchased lack. I've been working in technology as a software developer and IT leadership for almost 20 years and I'm impressed in the way that he teaches/describes fundamentals of programming. Again, in this area he does a great job of building on information you previously learned and demonstrating key concepts in programming.I finished a couple projects using a couple of other books, then picked up this book and the lights came on! Excellent work by the author to create a technical reference that is readable to the lay-person. This is by far one of the best technical books I've seen in my career.

I am a noob to Arduinos. I fiddled with some online tutorials and got the hang of it. Within a couple of hours I had a fully functional dice rolling sketch with 7 LEDs (to mimic the pips on a die) and had it rolling random rolls, and then slowing down when you release a push-button, until it lands on a final number, with sound (thanks to a micro speaker.) I did all that without this book. However, this book takes you from this level (or even simpler) and walks you through some really advanced project ideas, and shows you exactly how a lot of the equipment works that you can get for an Arduino. I find this an incredibly useful teaching guide and project suggester. Thanks!

Late to the Arduino game, as a long-time software developer found this book superb in its presentation. Hard to find any fault with it, its not a reference work more of a practical applications / real world implementation book.Have had a lot of software development related books and this stuff is hard to present in an easy-to-consume manner & this author does it here.

I purchased this because of the other reviews, most of which were very positive. I'm just getting in to Arduino, and so far this book is a great help. It's very well written, and has excellent clear easy to understand pictures. I'm not a 'techy' but like to tinker. This book is interesting - not just because I brought an Arduino but it is an interesting book. The projects go from very simple to what at the moment look impossible, but with the way the projects are explained I am confident I'll manage without too much difficulty. If you have or are thinking of getting into this Arduino business get this book. Very highly recommended.

This book is primarily a collection of insights based on common sense. Yet, even common sense isn’t always common or easily recognized when it pushes you to step outside your comfort zone.This book holds your hand as you step beyond your self-doubts and venture into that world of “I am worth it.”Unlike most similar books, Mr. Kasanoff actually explains how to take these baby steps. He doesn’t just tell you that you need to be generous, he explains some of the ways you can be generous and still end up promoting yourself. For instance, his first chapter (which is entitled, “Help This Person”) explains how you can help yourself by helping others (really helping others, not just going through the motions). He makes it seem so easy that you wonder why you hadn’t thought of it yourself. In fact, I found myself nodding along as I read, while thinking, “I can do that.” One of the examples he gives of helping others to help yourself is this: when the phone rings on a busy day, don’t get frustrated by the interruption. Instead, think about how you can help the person who is calling…really help them. When you help them, they remember you (in a positive way). Then when you need help, they want to return the favor.All his chapters are like this. Each one helps you determine how to be the kind of person other people want to help, want to promote, and want to remember.It’s a fast read, but one read-through isn’t enough. This is the type of book you will find yourself referring to over and over again.

Initially I thought it is a modern version of Del Carnegie. It did help me to change my perspective on helping others. The day before I read this book an agent from one of my cell phone providers left a message asking it is very important that I call them immediately regarding the cell phone I subscribe with them. I called, spent about five minutes finding out that it is simply a sales promotion call and the sales people tricked me to call them. I was annoyed and simply asked them to cancel my phone as I don't use it anyways. In retrospect after reading the book I now think I could have handled the call differently. I am not surprised in most cases with Bruce's approach and suggestions specifically how to deal with people that you have fundamental differences in values and beliefs. Approaches I used to take are - argue, justify, accommodate, ignore or supress feelings. However, years back somebody with whom I had always disagreements, agreed on one principle to work together going forward - instead of spending time on arguing about things that we disagree or don't believe in, we will focus and work on the things that we agree. Since then everything that we did was successful. Even the things that we used to argue in the past, we did not argue anymore rather considered them as different way or options to achieve the goal. The world is neither filled with saints nor with devils so that we can distinguish one from the other. Also this is a perspective varies by individuals or environment they live in which also changes over time. Now, with better communication and information exchanges through the social media, we know our differences better which helps better understanding of where we stand and cooperate.

"If you find yourself talking a great deal, you may wish to consider whether you are spending time with the right people." ....indeed, you don't learn much by talking, and yet most love to hear themselves talk and are oblivious and blind to the myriad of feedback listeners are bombarding them with. Yes, i totally know never finish a sentence with a preposition, but i got 5% battery left on my tablet and have to pull a Steve Martin. Besides it takes too long to be concise today. Quick read that supports what i already cherish. Thank you Bruce.

I took the time to read it again. The second read was to focus on specific topics that I felt I knew. That made all the difference. Thanks for the opportunity to gain a new perspective on what I thought I already had in my skills bank.

I just read this book, it was so practical and I see it working already.I always wondered why some people had a high opinion of me and others disliked me from the very start. This book gave me some insight to that.I have "Helped This Person" a great deal in my life, but only the people I liked and were comfortable with.Now the challenge is to help the ones that, in my eyes, don't deserve it. I just may discover something new about them that could change my opinion, but as Bruce mentions you have to be prepared to be disappointed too, and just move on from there.Good Read. A+

I loved his reminder that the best way to sell is to help people get what they want. We can get so busy trying to do our thing we can forget this. I'm planning to try Active Constructive Responding.

There is a lot of obvious information here, however, my big take away from "How To Self-Promote Without Being A Jerk" is that we may know what to do, and recognize it when we hear it, however, how often do we actually do the right thing?Hands down this is the best example of what to do to have impact in life condensed in a very helpful and useful guidebook. I recommend everyone read it and apply the advice given. Well worth the investment and sure to be re-read and used by me and many others.

This is the only travel guide available, as Lonely Planet doesn't publish a book for the Congo. But,. there's not much information here and it's horribly outdated. The Congo is one of the few places on the planet though where your typical guidebook is mostly useless anyway because there are hotels and restaurants only in the capital city and a couple of other cities. Mostly, when traveling into the Congo, there are villages without any tourist facilities, so one has this and a lot of personal research before the trip can be contemplated.

I have been interested in traveling to the Congo for ages and this is the first guide book Ive seen. I just received it earlier this week and I keep pouring over it. I am amazed by the research and writing. Even though the Congo is an extreme travel destination, the book is as readable as any guide to India or Guatemala. Because things are always changing in the Congo it's impressive that the author could put as much into concrete text as he did. A lot of it is "you'll have to see how it is when you arrive" but the color and details really help to make the journey more imaginable. I think this book will come in very handy next year when I finally visit!

This was an extremely helpful book for my trip to the Congos. I don't know what I would have done without it.
