Healing from Trauma: A Survivor's Guide to Understanding Your Symptoms and Reclaiming Your Life, by Jasmin Lee Cori

From Publishers Weekly

Psychotherapist Cori (The Tao of Contemplation: Re-Sourcing the Inner Life) translates the dark language of trauma in this primer of agony and recovery, with a deep understanding of the tortuous journey many suffer after sexual assault, war, violence and childhood abuse. Skillfully, she avoids the bevy of usual tales of misery found in self-help books on trauma, focusing instead on the resilience of the spirit, regaining control and resuming a renewed life. Very timely and informative, Cori's guidebook includes a long segment on PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), recognizing the emotional and moral conflicts faced by troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and attempting to reintegrate into society. The author offers solid information on types of trauma disorders and stresses the importance of selecting caring, sensitive health practitioners and therapists as critical to speed the healing quest (she offers sensible specifics on choosing a therapist). Concluding with her own story as an incest survivor (based on recovered memories), the book is a compact, knowing work of atonement, grace, compassion and healing. (Nov.) This book did nothing for me. I found it very frustrating. I read it, then threw it in the trash.I found none of the suggestions helpful and most chapters of the book seemed unfinished. That's the only word that comes to mind regarding this book, "unfinished".At the end of every chapter I felt unfulfilled, like I was waiting for something else to be said or suggested that never materialized.I found the chapter titled " Selecting Your Interventions" again, frustrating. EMDR and Alternating Bilateral Stimulation, The Tara Approach, and Somatic Therapies are just some of the interventions to choose from. Some of us can't afford therapists, so these interventions aren't helpful.Waste of my time and money.Yes, I know this isn't a very in-depth review, I'm just stating how I personally felt after reading it.However, I did buy and read "I Can't Get Over It" by Aphrodite Matsakis, which I found quite helpful.

I jump around in this book quite a bit, but it's got sections for everybody. From the person who is new to learning their healing and beginning their journey after trauma, to being able to speak and help loved ones help the trauma survivors. This is a great read. I still have not read the whole thing front to back, but it is a book that helps to normalize some of the confusing and scary emotions and symptoms that survivors experience. I, personally, often felt crazy because I was a happy, quiet girl who changed into someone who now feels a lot of anger and has very little patience for when people seem to be using me. I figured, I was broken and that whole shift was just a result of the trauma. While this shift was a result of the trauma, I have discovered that it is very normal and me being able to be assertive instead of passive aggressive (as I was before my traumas) was actually a good thing. Also, I read the portion meant for my loved ones and it helped me be able to put into words how I needed them to help me. Most days, I simply needed a listening ear and someone to see me for who I am, instead of seeing me for the trauma that I have lived though. Being able to now tell my family and friends this has helped us all be able to better navigate the road to my healing without them feeling alienated and it has helped decrease the over all frustration as well.

Once I was diagnosed with PTSD- my therapist gave me this book. He specializes in several body/mind therapies and uses this books with his clients a lot. It really helped me understand trauma- and how in has manifested in ways that I didn't realize were related. It helped me gain an objective view on my wounds and how they've affected my nervous system, body AND mind. This book is ESSENTIAL for anyone with a trauma disorder who wants to really understand how it's affecting you on all levels, how to manage it, and deeply powerful perspective- clinically- on how to treat trauma holistically. My therapist used TRE therapy- which is a body based healing method- very similar to what is in this book. The theory and healing contained in this book is profound!

This book is the most helpful and TRUTHFUL book that I have read about recovering from an unhappy past, and I have read a LOT of books! It is not preachy or abstract, like books written from educated "experts." The author knows what's-what when it comes to fears and emotional turmoil. She gives REAL help when it comes to getting a grip on past hurts and traumas. Have a pen handy to write down and GET OUT all your mixed-up memories and feelings and thoughts as you read. This book is like a rope handrail that you can hold onto as you begin to excavate out the black crap inside that is causing trouble in your life. I'd definitely also recommend reading this book with Rokelle Learner's "Daily Affirmations" so you can renew yourself with positive and life-giving ideas.

The thing that I, and the clients I've assigned this book to as homework (and they have actually read it, or some of it- there's no rush) have all said that the authenticity stands way out. They get that this is not theoretical, it experiential. The fact that she doesn't recount trauma after trauma but instead makes the correct assumption- we know enough about trauma already and then begins to give us something that will help us shake the bounds of the constructed self off..Even though it does not directly recount trauma that doesn't mean it's not potentially triggering (I got triggered last night by it). If it wasn't tickling the limbic system it would be all left brained and that's one of my, I can't speak for anyone else, most polished maladaptions that is socially acceptable. She nails it in the first chapter, the second etc. I teach yoga for free to vets with PTSD. The body work is hugely important. I am also a RYT, trained in IFS, and a MFT. I buy these books 3 or 4 at a time. I HIGHLY recommend this book.Keith Allen, MMFT, RYT,Trauma Sensitive Yoga Certification from the trauma center, Meditation teacher

A great book. She really focuses on the solution once the problem is identified. Can't say that about very many books that promise to help but don't really provide anything useful.

The descriptions and symptoms are very good. Not really enough practical info hands on help to healing. Seems you mostly have to go through some kind of counselor. Who can afford that these days?

This book was such an eye-opener!! And I have a Bachelors Degree in Social Work! I had no idea how many of the things I dealt with regularly were actually symptoms from my trauma! And that understanding alone was worth the price. The second half of the book goes over different types of therapies and such that can assist in overcoming the trauma and I am excited to try some of them out, which were new to me.The author writes with such compassion that you truly feel valued as a reader. Definitely worth buying!!!

I'll be honest, all in all I liked reading about Andy's journey with CF. I can understand how he feels and he does a good job of describing what he has been through. While reading i felt as though half of this book was written to help you understand andy and his journey and the other half is simply a "look what i did." At times he came off as whiny and emotional. Also although it's never metioned it's written as though andy grew up with "deep pockets." Which is fine, it just helps me understand him. Overall i feel for you Andy. Fight the good fight

This book is an inspring look at how a courages young adult stood up to this disease and looked it straight in the eye. Rather than let CF beat him, he is beating it. I dont know what it is like to have CF, but the Author's description of his own life inspire me to stand up against my own minor problems and face them head on. I read the book on one long delayed flight and I finished it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book for anyone, CFer or not!

This was a very good book and I learned so much from Andy.Just his thoughts and experiances that he shared will make me and help me be a better parent and understand the feelings that my son will have as he grows older. My son is 4 with CF and as I am writing this and I must admit I am not a good writer and he is telling me not to give up, you see he is already a fighter and this book will only help me out in his future to be a better person and a fighter! Thanks so much Andy for sharing your life with us.

This book really opens your eyes to a loved one with CF. Being married to someone with CF gives challenges alone. But, Reading Andy's book shows you that through thick and thin CF has come along way. Medical research has given them alonger median and now Andy has voiced to all that is associated with CF what we deal with. I recommend this book to everyone to open their eye and to helps Andy and everyone else with CF find a CURE

I am not a reader, but I could not put this book down. I read it on the beach at Cabo San Lucas. I have kids who are struggling with health problems. This book gives hope and strength to anyone who is facing impossible odds. Andy is obviously a man of deep character and tremendous resolve. If you are struggling yourself or know anyone who is, get them this book.

I found the book totally inspiring!! I pray that when my daughter is old enough to read that she will be as inspired as I was. Thank you Andy for doing such a wonderful book!!!

This book is very enlightning and inspiring. I hate reading and I loved this book! It is a must read.

This was a great book it really inspired me.

In The Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives, by Steven Levy

From Publishers Weekly

The contradictions of the Internet search behemoth are teased apart in this engaging, slightly starry-eyed business history. Wired magazine writer Levy (Hackers) insightfully recaps Google's groundbreaking search engine and fabulously profitable online ad–brokering business, and elucidates the cutting-edge research and hard-nosed cost-efficiencies underlying them. He also regales readers with the "Googley" corporate culture of hip techno-capitalism: the elitist focus on braininess, the campus game rooms, the countercultural rectitude of billionaire founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin (which can read more like puerile arrogance as they roller-blade into meetings with business-suited squares). Levy's narrative updates a familiar portrait of the company, with breathless accounts of recent innovations. He offers a smart analysis of the tensions between Google's "âÇÿDon't Be Evil'" slogan and its censorship of its Chinese Web site and the privacy implications of its drive to sponge up all information—but he accepts Google's blinkered conception of e-ethics and its demands for huge tax breaks with too much complacency. Review

"Levy is America’s premier technology journalist. . . . He has produced the most interesting book ever written about Google. He makes the biggest intellectual challenges of computer science seem endlessly fun and fascinating. . . . We can expect many more books about Google. But few will deliver the lively, idea-based journalism of In the Plex.” —Siva Vaidhyanathan, The Washington Post "Almost nothing can stop a remarkable idea executed well at the right time, as Steven Levy's brisk-but-detailed history of Google, In the Plex, convincingly proves. . . . makes obsolete previous books on the company." —Jack Shafer, The San Francisco Chronicle "The rise of Google is an engrossing story, and nobody's ever related it in such depth." —Hiawatha Bray, The Boston Globe "Dense, driven examination of the pioneering search engine that changed the face of the Internet. Thoroughly versed in technology reporting, Wired senior writer Levy deliberates at great length about online behemoth Google and creatively documents the company’s genesis from a 'feisty start-up to a market-dominating giant.' The author capably describes Google’s founders, Stanford grads Larry Page and Sergey Brin, as sharp, user-focused and steadfastly intent on 'organizing all the world’s information.' Levy traces how Google’s intricately developed, intrepid beginnings and gradual ascent over a competitive marketplace birthed an advertising-fueled 'money machine' (especially following its IPO in 2004), and he follows the expansion and operation of the company’s liberal work campus ('Googleplex') and its distinctively selective hiring process (Page still signs off on every new hire). The author was afforded an opportunity to observe the company’s operations, development, culture and advertising model from within the infrastructure for two years with full managerial cooperation. From there, he performed hundreds of interviews with past and current employees and discovered the type of 'creative disorganization' that can either make or break a business. Though clearly in awe of Google’s crowning significance, Levy evenhandedly notes the company’s more glaring deficiencies, like the 2004 cyber-attack that forced the removal of the search engine from mainland China, a decision vehemently unsupported by co-founder Brin. Though the author offers plenty of well-known information, it’s his catbird-seat vantage point that really gets to the good stuff. Outstanding reportage delivered in the upbeat, informative fashion for which Levy is well known." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"An instructive primer on how the minds behind the world's most influential internet company function." —Richard Waters, The Wall Street Journal "[Steven Levy] spent much of the past three years playing anthropologist at one of the Internet's most interesting villages and set of inhabitants -- the Googleplex and the tribue of Googlers who inhabit it. . . . A deep dive into Google's culture, history and technology." --Mike Swift, San Jose Mercury News"The wizards of Silicon Valley often hype their hardware/software breakthroughs as 'magical' for the products' ability to pull off dazzling stunts in the blink of an eye. And true to the magicians' code, these tech talents rarely let mere mortals peer behind the curtains. . . . That's what makes Levy's just-out tome so valuable." —Jonathan Takiff, The Philadelphia Daily News "The most comprehensive, intelligent and readable analysis of Google to date. Levy is particularly good on how those behind Google think and work. . . . What's more, his lucid introductions to Google's core technologies - the search engine and the company's data centres - are written in non-geek English and are rich with anecdotes and analysis. . . . In The Plex teems with original insight into Google's most controversial affairs." —Andrew Keen, New Scientist "Steven Levy's new account [of Google], In the Plex, is the most authoritative to date and in many ways the most entertaining." —James Gleick, The New York Review of Books

I went into this book thinking I was going to obtain insight into how the Google founders think and how Google approaches business. I was worried that the author, apparently given inside access and being one who writes professionally depending on this kind of access, would have a compromised objectivity by painting only a rosy picture. Then as I read on, it felt at times like I was reading an advertisement for why one should work at Google and something written to avoid offending the corporate Google and its employees.Even Google mistakes are cast in a positive upbeat light. No real discussion of blunders like the Logitech Google relation with Google TV.Wasn't explicitly looking for the bad....but just looking for something truthful and insightful. Google and its founders success are obvious. They've done great things and the founders and employees have done excellent ground breaking work. And the book is written well in the sense that it's easy to read and conveys information in the form of stories versus more dry treatments. However, it reads only like something a fan would write about their idol...and there are discrete instances where I even cringed at how much of a fanboy book this was. It's unfortunate but a reality that it's hard to obtain inside access to companies in order to write about them and then not write anything but a glowing story. Otherwise...no one else will let you in. Not to mention that it's written about contemporary living powerful people and a corporation...so it would be intimidating to write anything more blunt. It's no wonder that you see books on the likes of Ford and Edison long after their time that are more of an exposure of reality....and we will probably have to wait 50-100 years to hear what really makes Google tick, how the founders think, and how the company works. Which is a shame because it could be helpful to entrepreneurs who really would like to learn from such folks and not just be fed fluff. The real deal, warts and all, the good and bad, will have to wait.

Want free food and dry cleaning, on work-site physicians, masseuses? Go to work for Google, the Net's hottest search engine.Google marked a turning point in civilization as its revolution in technology and computer dynamics evolved into the "world's information". At Google the future is already underway. More than 70% of searches are Google searches in the U.S.But beyond just search this enterprise would remake the energy industry, the medical information infrastructure, the book world, radio, television and communications. All this began by two Montessori kids who evolved questioning authority.Book searches were a Google staple where an estimated 33 million published books became a targeted sanctum.

This book describes the initial growth of Google, and does a good job of describing how the Google culture (kind of like Intel's chip production allocation culture) generally tries to be a data-driven culture that operates by collecting lots of data (eg user queries) and then analyzing the data to determine how to proceed. In this way, the culture de-emphasizes individual human opinions in favor of aggregate statistical results, where they are available. But I have mixed feelings about the book. Much of it reads like so many of the other gooey, sugary fan books of various Silicon Valley companies where stereotypes are emphasized because it makes a "better" story because of the images that are invoked. (eg. It's cool to do all the anti-traditional (dare I say almost juvenile?) things (like scavenger hunts, etc) normally associated with tech start-ups and their people). It seems to me that ever since the late 1970s too many tech-company books have spread the "it's cool to do X" gooey company philosophies around, and this book seems to be no different.I think the strength of the book is the discussion of how search grew up, and the descriptions of the technical / algorithmic solutions and infrastructures that were required to implement the Google that we know today. I found the main weakness of the book to be all the tedious descriptions of how wonderful the corporate anti-traditional culture was, and how special it was (really, how could it be, after 30+ years of engineer - driven tech companies before Google?).I would recommend this book to people who are interested in a layman's-level description of how search grew up, the issues that arose, and the technical / infrastructure solutions that were developed. The scale and technical sophistication of the Google infrastructure (like Amazon and it's AWS infrastructure) just boggles the technical mind, and it is quite interesting to read about it. But I really think the gooey cult stuff was overdone in the book.

"I've been amazed and thrilled by the work of Szukalski." - Drew Friedman, The New Yorker"Szukalski’s sculptures and drawings were dramatic, monumental, surreal. The title comes from one of his best known works―a tense, sinewy hand with eagle heads emerging out of the fingertips―but also substitutes for the overarching theme of his life." - The Observer

Good book. Good selection of drawings, sculpture. I haven't read it extensively yet, but its well worth the money. I was brought to this by his monotone drawings, specifically in their similarity to Ernst Fuchs' Loacoon. I found the sculpture in this book to be every bit as fascinating as the drawings I purchased it for.I tend towards fantastic realism painting. This did not disappoint.

The art community needed a well designed presentation of Szukalski's work. I don't know how relevant some of the family and friends biography is in the beginning, makes it feel a bit like grandstanding but perhaps they deserve to pat their own backs as they recognized a master when few others did.

Whether you know of the art from celebrity buzz or having seen something at an exhibition or simply from reading the amazing history of the man and his work, it is hard not to be impressed by the volume, detail and ultimately, emotional wallop delivered here. The photography is very good throughout and and the annotation is smart, if sometimes more than necessary. I'll admit I go to the bronzes and often skip over the drawings, but it's all fine work. Fairly priced, and a real bargain from secondhand sources.

glad I could get Last Gasp publishing products through amazon

This gentleman's art is beautifully reproduced in this book. The foreward is something different too!The artist himself mentions Rodin and Michelangelo - Escher and Dali have a place in there too I think. The man's work is diverse and fascinating. The text, by the artist and others, is plain spoken - and truthful.

For me watching this documentary was a revelation. He writes in a special language almost as if he is connecting to the universe. A mystic in many ways...and it is stated in the documentary. He is a Micheal Angelo of the 20th century. I have been painting a long time...and he is right "the painting has to have meaning". I have to buy it to watch over and over again.

Amazing book about a great Genius’s work

The artists works are incredible, profound and virtuosic. They stand alone and speak for themselves.

The Deacon's Ministry of the Word

Review

Deacon Cormier has done a commendable job of providing deacons and other preachers with a fine introduction to the ministry of the Word. He avoids simplistic remedies and instead employs solid rhetorical and communication theory in a meaningful and thoroughly accessible fashion, wisely using both sacred and secular sources and examples. Any preacher, novice or veteran, would benefit from attention to Cormier's analyses, suggestions, and exercises. I know I have.Dr. Richard Stern, Professor of Homiletics, Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of TheologyWhat is abundantly clear in The Deacon's Ministry of the Word is that its author, Jay Cormier, not only understands the art of communication but is a gifted communicator. With clarity and conciseness, with bundles of examples and engaging images, he lays out a vision of preaching that is spot on target. What a gift to the preaching community.Robert F. Morneau, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Green Bay, Pastor of Resurrection ParishThere is no such thing as "diaconal" preaching, as distinct from presbyteral or lay preaching. But, as Cormier notes, there is a way in which the distinct experiences of the deacon-as a man of service among the marginalized-should shape his preaching. Using an abundance of clear and simple examples, mostly drawn from his own preaching, Cormier illuminates that way. Cormier shows how the deacon can "pass his life through the fire of thought" in order to speak a relevant word for ordinary folk struggling to make sense of the Gospel in daily life.Ann M. Garrido, Associate Professor of Homiletics, Aquinas Institute of TheologyThis is an ideal book, even a handbook, for deacons to use as a resource in improving their preaching of the Word. We can all use this book to take the Gospel message and apply it to our own lives and not be as reluctant to bring others to a better understanding of our faith.Catholic Library WorldHighly recommended not only for deacons but also for anyone who preaches God's Word.Pastoral Music

Hermetic Magic: The Postmodern Magical Papyrus of Abaris

Review

Stephen Flowers presents a holistic view of the magic practiced in the eastern Mediterranean region in early A. D. - and brings those ideas and practices to life in a new and more relevant way. Hermetic Magic: The Postmodern Magical Papyrus of Abaris describes the roots of the Hermetic tradition in Greek, Egyptian and Hebrew cultures. Flowers provides keys to Hermetic magical theory, cosmology, and concept of the soul and outlines the complex Hermetic world of Divinities and Daimons, plus magical lore for the Greek alphabet, the Egyptian hieroglyphics and other alphabets. Readers will find the basis for experimentation in the conceptual world of the ancient Hermetic magicians and instructions for performance of 53 operations based on an authentic text from the Greek magical papyri of pagan Egypt. -- Midwest Book Review

I bought this book, based on wanting to learn more about the Greek Magical Papyri (pmg ) without actually having to read the gmp. It is written by a scholar who studied various works, he has edited out many of the horrific spellcrafting from the ancient books, that I was dreading sorting through.I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning about the pmg, and does not want to wade through the kind of ancient spellcraft that gives nightmares to contemporary practitioners.A huge THANK YOU to Stephen Edred Flowers for taking on this project, and taking out the negativity. Although he recommends serious students also read the pmg, I am one who will just stop at this book. Lots of great information, interesting comparisons to early Christianity and the teachings of Jesus, in addition to recognition of the Pagan foundations. Highly recommended.

I was definitely prepared to dismiss this as another frothy New Age production with the term "hermetic" used as a synonym for esoteric, occult or simply "cool". Instead Flowers does a good job of outlining the true history of classical Hermeticism, explaining its mixed Greek and Egyptian roots, its subsequent history, cosmology, Hermetic gematria and the operative magical use of Hermeticism in the Greek Magical Papyri.I'm not wild about the term "postmodern" which already has a current definition that to my mind doesn't fit how Flowers uses it, because postmodernism is still atheistic/materialistic. On the other hand, what should we call the worldview that is necessary for astrology, alchemy and magic? A bit of a conundrum! Flowers is entirely correct, however, in pointing to a change from the modern worldview as a prerequisite for true contemporary Hermeticist.I also wasn't wild at first about the "Epistle of Abaris" which is Flowers' own creation of a Hermetic text. Then I realized that this was totally traditional! Flowers' epistle is certainly within the mainstream of Hermetic thought and one would not balk at it if it was part of a newly found ancient Hermetic manuscript.Ultimately, I realized that basically any problem I had with Hermetic Magic stemmed from bad vibes off of the "postmodern" title. In point of fact, this is a very good introduction to the history, theory and practice of magic within classical (1st to 4th centuries AD) Hermeticism. Flowers points to all the key sources, the Corpus Hermeticum, the Greek Magical Papyri, which you can then read in the original. Ultimately, I think that Flowers' approach, seeing the origin of Hermeticism in synthesis and then immersing oneself in pre-modern Hermeticism and then finally producing a new synthesis, within this tradition, is the correct approach.

A practical manual for working with the PGM (Greek Magical Papyrii). Combine this with Dr. Stephen Skinner's Techniques of Graeco-Egyptian Magic and you have a complete course to provide you with a lifetime of work and exploration. If you are concerned about Flowers's changes (to modernize and streamline the rituals) he provides references to the original manuscript for you to determine their suitability. There is also a pronunciation chart in the appendices that alone would have made this book a must-have. And his theoretical chapter on how magic works, though short, is one of the better explanations I have read. Highly recommended.

great read

i love it

Flower's Hermetic Magic was something I took a chance on. I was somewhat interested in the Greek Magical Papyri as an example of authentic pagan magical practices of the Roman Imperial Era and Flower's book promised to provide a guide to them and the milieu of ancient Hermeticism.Every review I found online was utterly unhelpful as they tended to center on the author, Stephen Edred Flowers, who is controversial due to his membership in the Temple of Set and being a founder of several Ásatrú groups (See his Wiki Page for more information). A good portion of the reviews of this book are more or less rants & character assassinations while another good portion exists to defend/praise Flowers. Very few reviews actually discussed the book in any detail.Taking my chances, I decided to get the book and I was presently surprised as it seems to be an excellent introduction to the Greek Magical Papyri from a practical standpoint and provides a good background and jumping off point for further exploration. It however has some distracting features such as Flower's Setian background showing through in parts along with controversial opinions bleeding through and treated as fact - which I will point out later in my review. The book is presented in several sections: History - which takes a quick look at the cultural streams present in the Papyri (Flowers identifies Hellenic, Egyptian, Iranian, Gnostic, Semitic, and Christian streams). In the 'Theory' section Flowers takes a look at the Cultural beliefs and practices of all the identified cultural streams and provides among other things an excellent look at Egyptian & Greek views of the parts of the Body (both physical and metaphysical), various cosmologies, the writing systems (which includes a short lessons on Hieroglyphics, Hieratic, Demotic, Coptic, Greek, and Semitic systems - an appendix also includes a pronunciation guide to the Greek of the Era), Greek Gematria, Iamblichus' Numerology, and a lot of really good nuggets of information intended as a jumping off points for deeper study - which Flowers heavily encourages. The Praxis section is composed of a description of the most common tools used in the Papyri,a suggestion of frame rituals, and a collection of some of the more accessible workings from the Magical Papyri - Flowers strongly recommends getting Betz's The Greek Magical Papyri in Translation (I have a copy).Throughout the text Flowers promotes a post-modern approach to Magic that is very similar in some respects to Chaos Magic but Flowers tends to stress a more syncretistic approach over eclecticism. He urges the reader to experiment and incorporate more streams into their practice (with the ancient material as a guide) based upon what works. He also has a great call for rationalism in Magic which I have reproduced below: "Rationality in magic must be rehabilitated. It must be restored to its rightful place as the foundation of magical development, but not as its essence. Modernism has split would-be magicians into two impotent camps - those who have rejected rationality all together (and have become so disorientated as to be virtually insane) and those who have embraced rationality totally (and have become virtually paralyzed as magicians)" (pp. 140-141)Flower's book is not all wonderful however as in some instances his Setian background barges through and may alienate some readers such as his dislike of the 'decadent' Osirian Cult due to its increasingly demonetization of Set over time in later eras Ancient Egyptian civilization or his view of the historical Jesus being a libertine gnostic - granted that you can really say anything about Jesus given that the only non-religious source we have amounts to a mention but most of the earlier texts depict him as very faithful to the spirit and principles of the Torah and I tend to see the very late gnostic libertine view as an extreme long shot as a guide to the historical Jesus' character. In addition Flower's 'Left Hand' views (which are mostly centered on individualism and self-reliance) are evident in a couple of instances (where he clearly stating an opinion) that may alienate some readers but they are not really large obstacles.Overall, it still it has more than enough good practical information about Greco-Roman-Egyptian Magic and the syncretistic world of late antiquity to make it well worth reading and an excellent springboard into further study and understanding (which is the intention of the book in the first place).

A+

Good book.useful workings from an extremely old source. Direct approach though kind of made for a general appeal it seems

Teared up when I read this book to my newborn. Easy, simple language and a positive and loving message from any parent to their child. I got the board book dormat — which apparently doesn’t have the foil embossing in the illustrations as some other reviewers mentioned. Adorable illustrations and quality binding/printing.

This is our first Emma Dodd book. As soon as we got it, hubby read it to our 1 year old. It's about a parent (wolf) telling his/her little one what they wish for them. It's adorable and I loved just watching my husband read this to baby. I'll be checking out some of Dodd's other books. Buy this, you won't regret it.

My baby is only 4 months, so at this stage I choose stories for my own enjoyment, not his yet. "Wish" is sweet and sentimental, but not saccharine. The drawings are cute and catch my baby's attention. I hope this becomes one of my baby's favorites, because I certainly enjoy it!

Although the book never mentions huskies I got this to use as a guestbook for my friend’s baby shower as she loves huskies and the characters do look like huskies. Everyone adored it. The words are very touching and the shimmery details on every page make it light up. I’m certain my friend will cherish this for ever.

When my Grandson saw this book I bought him, he was so excited. The family had just read another by this author & he was so disappointed they had to take it back to the library. He sat right down & looking through the book.

My son loves this book! He has a wolf cub doll that he snuggles up with after we read this book. I'd say that it could have been written a little better, but the illustrations are a real winner.

I absolutely adore this book. it is so sentimental, it brings tears to my eyes. the language in it is a bit hard for my 16 month old to understand (such as "wish"), but the pictures are pretty and easy to understand, so I narrate most of it.

Super cute and sweet book. Nice quality - kind of a foam-like cover (thick). Very sweet story. I like wolves so this matched the theme of my baby shower perfect.
