I’m a student of moral development, so the idea that a scholar devoted himself to the root of character development pulled me into this book.I was grateful for the multiple vignettes on various men and women who found themselves on their path to maturity and ultimately character. It was difficult to follow the theme at times, but that was part of the charm of this book — I found myself getting immersed in each real-life story.The author returns often to the Protestant ethic...one that believes we are inherently flawed and cannot be made whole on our own. I share this ethic, but I was disappointed how forceful the author was at pointing it out (too often). It would have been more effective to allow the reader to arrive at these concepts on his/her own.The last chapter effectively summarizes the author’s intent, that pride is the root of all that undermines character, and humility is the root of the development of it.I highly recommend this book to any student of moral development. While morality is can be found on many paths, this one quote from the book is the common denominator:“Character is built in the course of your inner confrontation. Character is a set of dispositions, desires, and habits that are slowly engraved during the struggle against your own weakness.”

Brooks says publicly that he wrote this book to save his own soul.“The Road to Character” is about the cultural shift from the “little me” to the “BIG ME,” from a culture that encourages people to think humbly of themselves to a culture that encourages people to see themselves as the center of the universe. This cultural shift encourages us to think about having a great career but leaves nothing for us to develop an inner life and character. For Brooks, we have lost our way to “being good” and “doing good.”Brooks frames the discussion by contrasting “resume virtues” - those skills that one brings to the job market that contribute to external success – with “eulogy virtues” – those that are at the core of our being like courage, honesty, loyalty, and the quality of our relationships that contribute to real joy. These are embodied in two competing parts, Adam I and Adam II, of our nature that are a constant source of contradiction and tension.Adam I is the external Adam. He wants to build, create, produce and discover things. He is characterized by actively seeking recognition, satisfying his desires, being impervious to the moral stakes involved. He has little regard for humility, sympathy, and honest self-confrontation, which are necessary for building character. He wants to have high status, win victories, and conquer the world.Adam II is the internal Adam. He wants to embody certain moral qualities. Adam II is charity, love, and redemption.Adam I is at work in today’s “BIG ME” culture. “Big Me” messages are everywhere; you are special; trust yourself; and be true to yourself. This ‘Gospel of Self’ begins with childhood when awards and rewards are given for just being, not doing. “We are all wonderful, follow your passion, don’t accept limits and chart your own course.”This has led to an ethos based on a “ravenous hunger in a small space of self-concern, competition, and a hunger for distinction at any cost,” an ethos where envy has replaced admiration. This self-centeredness leads to several unfortunate directions: selfishness, the use of other people as a means to an end, seeing oneself as superior to everyone else, and living with a capacity to ignore and rationalize one’s imperfections and inflate one’s virtues.The “BIG ME” culture distorts the purpose of our journey and the meaning of life. “Parts of themselves go unexplored and unstructured. They have a vague anxiety that their life has not achieved its ultimate meaning and significance. They live with unconscious boredom, not really loving, and unattached to the moral purpose that gives life it’s worth. They lack the internal criteria to make unshakable commitments. They never develop inner constancy, the integrity that can withstand popular disapproval or a serious blow. They foolishly judge others by their abilities and not by their worth. This external life will eventually fall to pieces.”In this increasingly “BIG ME” culture, Brooks became haunted by the voices of the past and the quality of humility and character they exhibited. People in the past guarded themselves against some of their least attractive tendencies to be prideful, self-congratulatory, and hubristic. “You would not even notice these people. They were reserved. They did not need to prove anything in the world.” They embodied humility, restraint, reticence, temperance, respect, and soft discipline. “They radiated a sort of moral joy. They answered softly when challenged harshly. They were silent when unfairly abused, dignified when others tried to humiliate them, and restrained when others tried to provoke them…But they got things done. They were not thinking about what impressive work they were doing. They were not thinking about themselves at all. They just seemed delighted by the flawed people around them. They made you feel funnier and smarter when you spoke with them. They moved through all social classes with ease. They did not boast. They did not lead lives of conflict-free tranquility but struggled towards maturity. These people built a strong inner character, people who achieved a certain depth. They surrendered to the struggle to deepen their soul.”Brooks highlights the lives of prominent and influential people - Francis Perkins, Dwight Eisenhower, Dorothy Day, George C. Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, George Eliot, St. Augustine, Samuel Johnson, Michel de Montaigne – to articulate the diverse roads taken by a diverse set of people, white and black, male and female, religious and secular, literary and non-literary. Not one of them was even close to perfect. They were acutely aware of their own weaknesses and they waged an internal struggle against their sins to emerge with some measure of self-respect..“The Road to Character” is a “road less traveled.” It involves moments of moral crisis, confrontation, and recovery. To go up, one first has to go down (The “U Curve”); one must descend into the valley of humility to climb to the heights of character. Only then will one have the ability to see their own nature, their everyday self-deceptions, and shatter all Illusions of self-mastery.Humility is central to the journey. Humility leads to wisdom, a moral quality of knowing what you don’t know and finding a way to manage ignorance, uncertainty, and limitation. It offers freedom…freedom from the need to prove your superiority. Alice had to be small to enter Wonderland. “Only the one who descends into the underworld rescues the beloved.”The paradox for Adam I is that he cannot achieve enduring external success unless he builds a solid moral core as sought by Adam II. Without inner integrity, your Watergate, your scandal, your betrayal, will eventually happen. Adam I versus Adam II, Adam I ultimately depends on Adam II.Brooks wrote this book to learn who has traveled this road to character, and what it looks like. He found you cannot be the good person you want to be unless you wage this campaign against self. I highly recommend this book as one of the most profound books published this year.End note: Brook’s sections on love and suffering are excellent.

To be brief about this, The Road to Character should be required reading and, perhaps more importantly, discussion throughout the 50 States. He begins by asking the interesting question of whether the individual wants to be remembered as his/her "Resume" or "Eulogy". Do we lead our lives fueled by a desire to establish a resume of success or to be remembered by others in a eulogy. He presents this approach by referring to Adam 1 (Resume of significance) and Adam 2 (Eulogy of a life well spent). Mr. Brooks understands that we human beings are complicated animals and that we are all fallible and subject to the lesser instincts of life. But he also understands that we have the ability to understand ourselves - to look inward and recognize those weaknesses - to become part of a greater good than the self. He chooses as multiple topics of conversation, a number of significant individuals in our history and he analyzes how these very different people dealt with themselves. We all, everyone of us, need to understand that heroism comes in many forms and one need not be - cannot be - without flaw. The trick is to understand oneself and view our roles as parts of the jigsaw of life where we can all play a part. "Character" means knowing ourselves and remaining loyal to our nobler aspirations despite those flaws.

I read Brooks's columns in The New York Times sometimes and watch his Friday's weekly review with Mark Shields on PBS, so I had some idea of his 'style' before I made the purchase of this book. I wouldn't say it's fast-reading and enjoy the people that he selected. I can tell the author spent a lot of time researching all the biographical info, and the stories are fun to read, sometimes painful though. Very often do I sense that Brooks took over the 'voice' of the person he intended to write about and he kept it consistent, so that the reader can feel that this is all the same person. Insightful and thought-provoking for sure. Worth the reading for anyone above high school age.

Truly amazing book. I have bought extra copies for people and have recommended it to even more. He brings to light the difference between the culture we live in and the attributes that make life truly meaningful by highlighting our focus on resume virtues vs. the eulogy virtues. This book makes you want to go out and tell the world our culture is going the wrong direction. We need to be teaching our children there is more to life than making money, it's about developing a good character.

I love Longmire the TV show, and I have to give it to the people that took this book and turned it into the TV show, because the things that I do NOT like about this book are NOT in the tv show - I like Branch Connely (TV) but I hate Turk Connely (book) - I like Ferg (TV) but I hate Ferg (book) -Walt is a confused, horny old man in the book, but on TV he has much more confidence - and Vick, well not a big fan of her on TV, but in the book, she is a contemptuous, disrespectful B*****.I know that we are talking Apples and Oranges, but I picked up the book to get a deeper look into the Walt Longmire world, and I wish that I never opened the door - I do not enjoy this novel one bit.

I don't normally write reviews but feel I should in this instance. I gave this book 5 stars but feel the need to qualify that rating. This is not the fast pace of a Dan Brown thriller. But it is very well written, with a good plot, great characters, and an unexpected twist at the end. If you have not seen the Netflix Longmire series based on these books then I suggest you watch at least one or two if possible before reading this book. My wife and I have been watching Longmire for a long time before reading this book and that is why I felt the need to give it 5 stars. Not only did I already have a connection to many of the characters I especially felt a connection to Henry Standing Bear played by Lou Diamond Phillips. Every time I read one of his lines in the book I could not help but hear Lou Diamond Phillips and also visualize his interaction with the Longmire character. My wife and I are both from the mid-west and have lived in several mid-western states including Colorado. So we have spent some time in Wyoming as well, the setting for these books. Craig Johnson's colorful descriptions make it easy for us to envision just what his characters are seeing. I think you will find this book an enjoyable read...

To be honest I've been able to get only about 1/3 of the way through the book. The number of characters is extensive and I have a hard time remembering how each of them fits into the story; troubling since I have seen all of the Longmire episodes on television. The narrative form of the book makes it difficult for me to follow some of the conversations and with the story being told through Walt Longmire's eyes, it's hard to know what the other characters are seeing. I like the descriptions of the area and I understand the underlying mystery but this is a hard book for me to follow.

THE COLD DISH is the first in the LONGMIRE series. It's quite a bit different than the TV series.First off, Walt is kind of a goofball, and Vic tolerates him more than respects him. That's probably not the case, but she calls him names like fat****. That would ordinarily get you fired in most sheriff's offices.Henry is also bigger and seems to be a very good shot with a Sharp's rifle, the murder weapon in Walt's most recent case. Somebody is shooting four boys who were tried for raping Henry's niece, Melissa Little Bird. They were found guilty, but the judge gave them limited sentences in juvenile facilities.Whoever is killing the boys is shooting them at a very long distance, 500 yards. Walt could make that shot, as could Henry, and Melissa's father. Lonnie, who's missing his legs, and Omar, a Buffalo Bill like character who's an expert on the Sharp's rifle.In the middle of the book there's a kind of surprise. Walt is reflecting on his life—he's met a woman, Vonnie, who seems very interested in a relationship. Then there's the surprise. Martha, Walt's deceased wife, didn't really love him. Walt stuck it out because of his daughter, who is now a lawyer who doesn't call her father often enough. I don't remember hearing that in the TV series. Vic is also enduring an unhappy marriage, and she cares about Walt more than she lets on.There are some interesting minor characters: Lucian, the old sheriff, is living in a senior citizen's home. Walt plays chess with him once a week. In this book, Walt hires Lucian as a dispatcher for two days a week. He's an old-time western sheriff who sort of made his own rules as a case progressed, but Walt respects him and leans on him for advice. Turk is Lucian's nephew, an announced candidate for sheriff after Walt retires. Walt wants Vic to take his place.THE COLD DISH is just another instance of the book being better than the TV show. Walt has a sense of humor in the book. He also has a great deal of respect for Native American spirituality. There's a scene where Henry is wounded and Walt has to carry him back to safety in the middle of a blizzard. He almost freezes to death. He hears bells and sees ghostlike Cheyenne Indians who lead him out of danger, left with frost bitten ears and hands. You might want to read this section twice. I had no idea what was going on. Somewhere in there Vic was also coming to his aid.You won't be able to guess who killed those boys. But I'll give you a hint: remember the old adage, “It's always the one you least expect.”

This book did nothing for me. I found it very frustrating. I read it, then threw it in the trash.I found none of the suggestions helpful and most chapters of the book seemed unfinished. That's the only word that comes to mind regarding this book, "unfinished".At the end of every chapter I felt unfulfilled, like I was waiting for something else to be said or suggested that never materialized.I found the chapter titled " Selecting Your Interventions" again, frustrating. EMDR and Alternating Bilateral Stimulation, The Tara Approach, and Somatic Therapies are just some of the interventions to choose from. Some of us can't afford therapists, so these interventions aren't helpful.Waste of my time and money.Yes, I know this isn't a very in-depth review, I'm just stating how I personally felt after reading it.However, I did buy and read "I Can't Get Over It" by Aphrodite Matsakis, which I found quite helpful.

I jump around in this book quite a bit, but it's got sections for everybody. From the person who is new to learning their healing and beginning their journey after trauma, to being able to speak and help loved ones help the trauma survivors. This is a great read. I still have not read the whole thing front to back, but it is a book that helps to normalize some of the confusing and scary emotions and symptoms that survivors experience. I, personally, often felt crazy because I was a happy, quiet girl who changed into someone who now feels a lot of anger and has very little patience for when people seem to be using me. I figured, I was broken and that whole shift was just a result of the trauma. While this shift was a result of the trauma, I have discovered that it is very normal and me being able to be assertive instead of passive aggressive (as I was before my traumas) was actually a good thing. Also, I read the portion meant for my loved ones and it helped me be able to put into words how I needed them to help me. Most days, I simply needed a listening ear and someone to see me for who I am, instead of seeing me for the trauma that I have lived though. Being able to now tell my family and friends this has helped us all be able to better navigate the road to my healing without them feeling alienated and it has helped decrease the over all frustration as well.

Once I was diagnosed with PTSD- my therapist gave me this book. He specializes in several body/mind therapies and uses this books with his clients a lot. It really helped me understand trauma- and how in has manifested in ways that I didn't realize were related. It helped me gain an objective view on my wounds and how they've affected my nervous system, body AND mind. This book is ESSENTIAL for anyone with a trauma disorder who wants to really understand how it's affecting you on all levels, how to manage it, and deeply powerful perspective- clinically- on how to treat trauma holistically. My therapist used TRE therapy- which is a body based healing method- very similar to what is in this book. The theory and healing contained in this book is profound!

This book is the most helpful and TRUTHFUL book that I have read about recovering from an unhappy past, and I have read a LOT of books! It is not preachy or abstract, like books written from educated "experts." The author knows what's-what when it comes to fears and emotional turmoil. She gives REAL help when it comes to getting a grip on past hurts and traumas. Have a pen handy to write down and GET OUT all your mixed-up memories and feelings and thoughts as you read. This book is like a rope handrail that you can hold onto as you begin to excavate out the black crap inside that is causing trouble in your life. I'd definitely also recommend reading this book with Rokelle Learner's "Daily Affirmations" so you can renew yourself with positive and life-giving ideas.

The thing that I, and the clients I've assigned this book to as homework (and they have actually read it, or some of it- there's no rush) have all said that the authenticity stands way out. They get that this is not theoretical, it experiential. The fact that she doesn't recount trauma after trauma but instead makes the correct assumption- we know enough about trauma already and then begins to give us something that will help us shake the bounds of the constructed self off..Even though it does not directly recount trauma that doesn't mean it's not potentially triggering (I got triggered last night by it). If it wasn't tickling the limbic system it would be all left brained and that's one of my, I can't speak for anyone else, most polished maladaptions that is socially acceptable.She nails it in the first chapter, the second etc. I teach yoga for free to vets with PTSD. The body work is hugely important. I am also a RYT, trained in IFS, and a MFT. I buy these books 3 or 4 at a time. A great book. She really focuses on the solution once the problem is identified. Can't say that about very many books that promise to help but don't really provide anything useful.

The descriptions and symptoms are very good. Not really enough practical info hands on help to healing. Seems you mostly have to go through some kind of counselor. Who can afford that these days?

This book was such an eye-opener!! And I have a Bachelors Degree in Social Work! I had no idea how many of the things I dealt with regularly were actually symptoms from my trauma! And that understanding alone was worth the price. The second half of the book goes over different types of therapies and such that can assist in overcoming the trauma and I am excited to try some of them out, which were new to me.The author writes with such compassion that you truly feel valued as a reader. Definitely worth buying!!!

I'll be honest, all in all I liked reading about Andy's journey with CF. I can understand how he feels and he does a good job of describing what he has been through. While reading i felt as though half of this book was written to help you understand andy and his journey and the other half is simply a "look what i did." At times he came off as whiny and emotional. Also although it's never metioned it's written as though andy grew up with "deep pockets." Which is fine, it just helps me understand him. Overall i feel for you Andy. Fight the good fight

This book is an inspring look at how a courages young adult stood up to this disease and looked it straight in the eye. Rather than let CF beat him, he is beating it. I dont know what it is like to have CF, but the Author's description of his own life inspire me to stand up against my own minor problems and face them head on. I read the book on one long delayed flight and I finished it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book for anyone, CFer or not!

This was a very good book and I learned so much from Andy.Just his thoughts and experiances that he shared will make me and help me be a better parent and understand the feelings that my son will have as he grows older. My son is 4 with CF and as I am writing this and I must admit I am not a good writer and he is telling me not to give up, you see he is already a fighter and this book will only help me out in his future to be a better person and a fighter! Thanks so much Andy for sharing your life with us.

This book really opens your eyes to a loved one with CF. Being married to someone with CF gives challenges alone. But, Reading Andy's book shows you that through thick and thin CF has come along way. Medical research has given them alonger median and now Andy has voiced to all that is associated with CF what we deal with. I recommend this book to everyone to open their eye and to helps Andy and everyone else with CF find a CURE

I am not a reader, but I could not put this book down. I read it on the beach at Cabo San Lucas. I have kids who are struggling with health problems. This book gives hope and strength to anyone who is facing impossible odds. Andy is obviously a man of deep character and tremendous resolve. If you are struggling yourself or know anyone who is, get them this book.

I found the book totally inspiring!! I pray that when my daughter is old enough to read that she will be as inspired as I was. Thank you Andy for doing such a wonderful book!!!

I went into this book thinking I was going to obtain insight into how the Google founders think and how Google approaches business. I was worried that the author, apparently given inside access and being one who writes professionally depending on this kind of access, would have a compromised objectivity by painting only a rosy picture. Then as I read on, it felt at times like I was reading an advertisement for why one should work at Google and something written to avoid offending the corporate Google and its employees.Even Google mistakes are cast in a positive upbeat light. No real discussion of blunders like the Logitech Google relation with Google TV.Wasn't explicitly looking for the bad....but just looking for something truthful and insightful. Google and its founders success are obvious. They've done great things and the founders and employees have done excellent ground breaking work. And the book is written well in the sense that it's easy to read and conveys information in the form of stories versus more dry treatments. However, it reads only like something a fan would write about their idol...and there are discrete instances where I even cringed at how much of a fanboy book this was.It's unfortunate but a reality that it's hard to obtain inside access to companies in order to write about them and then not write anything but a glowing story. Otherwise...no one else will let you in. Not to mention that it's written about contemporary living powerful people and a corporation...so it would be intimidating to write anything more blunt. It's no wonder that you see books on the likes of Ford and Edison long after their time that are more of an exposure of reality....and we will probably have to wait 50-100 years to hear what really makes Google tick, how the founders think, and how the company works. Which is a shame because it could be helpful to entrepreneurs who really would like to learn from such folks and not just be fed fluff. The real deal, warts and all, the good and bad, will have to wait.

In this way, the culture de-emphasizes individual human opinions in favor of aggregate statistical results, where they are available.But I have mixed feelings about the book. Much of it reads like so many of the other gooey, sugary fan books of various Silicon Valley companies where stereotypes are emphasized because it makes a "better" story because of the images that are invoked. I found the main weakness of the book to be all the tedious descriptions of how wonderful the corporate anti-traditional culture was, and how special it was (really, how could it be, after 30+ years of engineer - driven tech companies before Google?).I would recommend this book to people who are interested in a layman's-level description of how search grew up, the issues that arose, and the technical / infrastructure solutions that were developed. The scale and technical sophistication of the Google infrastructure (like Amazon and it's AWS infrastructure) just boggles the technical mind, and it is quite interesting to read about it. But I really think the gooey cult stuff was overdone in the book.

Good book. Good selection of drawings, sculpture. I haven't read it extensively yet, but its well worth the money. I was brought to this by his monotone drawings, specifically in their similarity to Ernst Fuchs' Loacoon. I found the sculpture in this book to be every bit as fascinating as the drawings I purchased it for.I tend towards fantastic realism painting. This did not disappoint.

The art community needed a well designed presentation of Szukalski's work. I don't know how relevant some of the family and friends biography is in the beginning, makes it feel a bit like grandstanding but perhaps they deserve to pat their own backs as they recognized a master when few others did.

Whether you know of the art from celebrity buzz or having seen something at an exhibition or simply from reading the amazing history of the man and his work, it is hard not to be impressed by the volume, detail and ultimately, emotional wallop delivered here. The photography is very good throughout and and the annotation is smart, if sometimes more than necessary. I'll admit I go to the bronzes and often skip over the drawings, but it's all fine work. Fairly priced, and a real bargain from secondhand sources.

This gentleman's art is beautifully reproduced in this book. The foreward is something different too!The artist himself mentions Rodin and Michelangelo - Escher and Dali have a place in there too I think. The man's work is diverse and fascinating. The text, by the artist and others, is plain spoken - and truthful.

For me watching this documentary was a revelation. He writes in a special language almost as if he is connecting to the universe. A mystic in many ways...and it is stated in the documentary. He is a Micheal Angelo of the 20th century. I have been painting a long time...and he is right "the painting has to have meaning". I have to buy it to watch over and over again.
