I purchased the 21st Edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs, based upon reviews of previous editions of the book. I have built a few desktop PCs (reading other books and materials online to do so) and have replaced internal parts including memory, hard drives, video and sound cards, over the past 12 years. I consider myself an advanced intermediate in terms of upgrading and repairing PCs, with a desire to learn more.Getting a book with the latest information on this subject was important to me. This 21st edition, is the first I've seen from this author, is impressive and fit my needs perfectly!Who should buy this book?I think this book would be useful to anyone from a beginner to a strong intermediate PC user who is interested in building and repairing PCs.Those preparing to take specific IT related tests like the A+ Certification Exam, would also find it helpful and undoubtedly it is or will be used as a textbook for either high school or college students.What is included?You get this comprehensive hardbound book along with 45 days of FREE online access to the online edition of this book (code at back of the book) and a 2 hour DVD in which the author shows the components of a PC build and how they go together. His hands on approach is easy to understand and pleasant to watch.What will I learn with this book?Twenty chapters cover everything from the Development of the PC to PC Diagnostics, Testing and Maintenance. Networking, hardware types and functions, and building and upgrading systems are also covered.Basically anything hardware related - not software - for PCs is comprehensively covered by this 1000+ page book.Is it overly technical?Some parts of the book, by the nature of the subject, are technical. Something those who are new to PC upgrading and repair will appreciate.The book also has clear diagrams regarding each subject, cautions and tips which are all very helpful.Why this book over all the others?There are very few books on the subject of upgrading and repairing PCs that are not either too simplified like Upgrading and Fixing Computers Do-it-Yourself For Dummies or too technical and frankly only good for those who are intermediate to advanced PC users who are unafraid of a challenge.This book is useful to a spectrum of users from beginner to advanced, and sets the bar for what other writers should aspire to create with their technical writing.The book can be read from start to finish, or used as a handy reference. The DVD is a nice supplement to the book, but not a regurgitation of all that is in the book.You won't be wasting your money on this one - I highly recommend it!

I've been buying these books for years now ever since the 18th edition. I am an IT professional and I give these books an Scott Mueller every bit of credit for the knowledge I have in the field. I strongly recommend watching the DVD's that come with the books as they are very informative and give you a lot of practical knowledge from experience.

At first I was put off by the density of technical detail in Mueller's book, but as I began to read individual chapters, I grew to appreciate that this is an extremely useful, well written and interesting text on PC hardware. I bought this book as a companion to "Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC" by Andrews which was a textbook required for my A+ certification class. Both are 1000+ page books: Andrews' is an expensive carefully constructed textbook with glossy pages, lots of illustrations, exercises, projects. It covers both hardware and software. Mueller's book, is devoted strictly to hardware, and here's my comments:1. Historical Information: Mueller gives complete history of each of the components of a PC, such as the evolution of the processor or disk drives.2. Technical Reference: This book has dozens and dozens of comprehensive tables that deliniates the details of each successive release/update/upgrade/replacement for each component and sub-components of the PC, such as BIOS or diskdrive technology or whatever. Detailed and useful information is provided.3. Hardware: As mentioned above, this book is only for hardware, look elsewhere if you want to learn about operating systems, programs, etc...4. Troubleshooting: Not a whole lot about troubleshooting...though there are some useful items. Andrew's book has a couple of chapters of troubleshooting. It's hard to teach trouble-shooting. Mueller's approach, I would state, is that if you have a really good understanding of how the PC works, you're in a much better shape to understand how to fix it.5. Quality writing: this is one of the best written reference works I've ever encountered. So once I got over my reluctance to dig in, and actually started reading, I was very pleased at how well the information is presented. At first I just jumped into a few topics that were of interest. But once I got going, I realized that I would enjoy reading the whole story from the beginning, which I'm now doing. This is not an afternoon's project, but as technical reading goes, this is one of the best.

First, the physical book has a hard cover, quality paper, clear crisp font. I like the 'contents at a glance' along with a detailed contents section. The index seems complete and accurate. Each page has the section description, chapter # at the top, and page # bold/lager font. The book is loaded with useful tables and figures. Many of the tables have expansion of acronyms for quick reminder. Throughout the book are pointers to locations that expand on a specific topic.Second, the contents are in depth, up to date (as best can be done), and easy to understand.I have a vintage 2000 Dell desktop system. I planned to use the power supply unit and case for a new build. Thanks to this book, I discovered that the PSU is non-standard and not recommended for upgrade.If you are interested in upgrading or repairing your PC, get this book. You won't be disappointed.

Simple, sweet. A bit cheesy from the adult perspective, but my three year old loves it and the simple lines have helped her start sight reading, as she has memorized the story. Good for 2-5 year olds. The moral is that friends stick up for each other and look out for each other, and that life is more fun with a friend.

This is a story with very few sentences and a lot of heart. It's a very cute story about a stick and a stone, both lonely until they find each other. A short adventure ensues, and there is a lot of emotion in the simple story and drawings. My 3 and 5 year old sons really enjoy it.

Cute story to teach kids about friendship. Good size book for little kids, and sturdy pages for years of use. Simple reading- only a few words each page. Also good for learning vocabulary. Add prompts to enhance the story telling experience. Find a rock, stick(glue a fake leaf on) and a pinecone!

This is a wonderful book about inclusion, the power of friendship and the power of forgiveness, all wrapped up with beautifully simple illustrations. It was very simple to use for library storytime by gathering up small sticks, stones and pinecones and letting the kids glue googly eyes on them and take them home to recreate the story for their families. When I read it the first time, I had visions of the book "Hooper Humperdink, Not Him!" by Theo. LeSieg (Dr. Suess) that I read to my oldest when she was young. Both books teach an important lesson with very few words, but the message gets through.

We checked this book out from the local library and my 2 daughters (age 3 & 5) absolutely love it. It's a sweet story about friendship. When we returned the book to the library I immediately ordered a copy to keep.

This book is so sweet. The story is simple, but very catchy. My toddler (2 years, 4 months) is already reading along with me after just a few reads. I love that the message is all about sticking up for and helping out others in need- even if they are different than you. That lesson is a very important one I want to teach my son in this privileged and divisive culture.

This is a sweet story about friendship and using your unique abilities to help others. It is probably most appropriate for preschool and younger school age children, but there are some cute puns throughout the story to make an adult smile too.

My 3-year-old LOVES this book. A great rhyme scheme, lovely message, phenomenal illustrations. I've read it to his preschool class TWICE because it's such a hit. The hardcover edition is solid and great to read aloud -- would make a wonderful gift for a 3- or 4-year-old birthday.

The best test of a good read--to me--is the number of questions with which the book leaves me, and how my mind and body respond to the ending chapter. For this book, the overriding question sitting on my soul is: How can I go on without these characters in my immediate life?As for my cerebral and physical response to the book, well, this exquisitely written story literally knocked me out and as I finished the last sentence, I could not stand. The characters surrounded me and I simply had to sit and wait until they lifted away and permitted me to re-enter reality. That's how powerful every character and story, for it is one story made of many, affected me upon the finish.

People of the Book: A NovelWonderful story! Not very deep or developed characters, and not an unknown format - the plot moves back and forth from the present to various historical times when a book, which is actually the protagonist of the story, plays an important role in peoples' lives. This book, the Sarajevo Haggadah, actually exists, but the author gives it a very creative history and invents a myriad of characters and stories that are involved in transferring the book from here to there, each leaving a small sign or mark within its bindings and pages. What is interesting is that the (fictional) history of the book is told only to the reader, while the character who identifies all the clues of the book's journey through the centuries has no way of knowing how the specific findings she uncovers (a few grains of salt, an old blood stain, and more) came to be in the book. While the story surrounds a Jewish text, and clearly it is tied to Jewish history, it's a universal story. An intriguing yet easy read. Highly recommend it.

There are always those books that have been on your wishlist for years but you couldn't rationalize paying the full price for it; "People of the Book" was one of those books for me. I remember seeing this book in the bookstores back when I was in high school, and being totally drawn to the book art. I have to admit that I totally misinterpreted the cover. I most definitely thought it was making allusions to the the Egyptian God Horus. It is actually a wing of a moth, for those of you who are like me and the obvious alludes you.As with many New York Times Bestsellers, I am skeptical of their true merit. Not necessarily because these books aren't worthy of such titles, but rather because I always end up a little disappointed. I think I get disillusioned with what a "New York Times Bestseller" actually means in regards to the quality of the book. The "bestseller" title gives me high expectations for the book, but I should instead take it with a grain of salt given that it doesn't necessarily correlate with how much I will enjoy the book."People of the Book", as is apparent from the title, is the story of the multitude of people who were involved in the creation and/or safe-guarding of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah [a Jewish text].As was mentioned in a previous review, I absolutely love historical fiction pieces that intertwine multiple perspectives and storylines into the main plot. I believe that this sort of writing style for historical fiction is the most effective, as long as the transitions from past to present are done effectively. "People of the Book" did an excellent job with this and I genuinely enjoyed when the book had me time travel to unknown times and places. I would go so far as to say that I was even disappointed when the book took you back to the "present" main plot line. I, unfortunately, felt that the main plot line took away from the main focus of the book: the Haggadah. Particularly due to the love story between two of the main characters; it took away from the rest of the novel, and was unnecessary in the context of this story. The side stories, on the other hand, were perfection. My personal favorite was the last side-tale in which the artist behind the beautiful illuminations of the Haggadah was revealed.The construction of the plot line was artfully done, and I felt that the author did an excellent job in transitioning between the main plot line and the side stories. I particularly appreciated the chronological order she chose to take with these side narratives. In addition, Geraldine Brooks did not necessarily directly connect all the parts of the story together; she left a little mystery to it and gave just enough information for the reader to be able to discern it themselves.I am glad that I was finally able to read this book, but in the realm of historical fiction novels, this was not one of my favorites. I just felt that the main plot line took away from the side narratives, and there were parts of the main storyline that seemed extraneous. However, the central themes of the book are important ones, and Geraldine Brooks highlights them at every occasion she gets. The main theme being that historical artifacts are central to our history and their importance should be recognized. Unlike us, they are able to survive time and tell their stories to future generations, if only we would listen.

The story is quite complex made even more so by the switches between narrators and time periods. However, the underlying history of a Jewish book which escaped burning during the Inquisition, the exile of the Jews from Spain, and other historical events, including Hitler, the Holocaust, and others which should have spelled the end for the book. The key was the passion of various unrelated persons who risked their lives to save it. The novel is based on a true incident however, the individual vignettes were creative fiction invented to answer the unanswerable question of how it could have happened. It held my attention and always seemed to be rooted in real people. I've been interested in history and especially the history of the Jews during their diaspora. I think anyone with a similar interest will find the book provides details of that period which are less available than books that concentrate on World War II. I highly recommend it. Its worth the sometimes struggle of trying to keep up with the back and forth of time and place.

This book was recommended to me several years ago and I didn't get around to reading it until recently. So glad that I did! It was a good read -- hard to put down, in fact, but it had some real depth to it as well. In the course of the story, we learn about religious persecution and how it damages both the persecuted and the persecutors. These portions of the book were panful to read. The book also includes some description of religious tolerance, however, and the positive effects of that on the lives of all. I found it especially appropriate for the current time and the specter of religious intolerance looming. There are lots of different characters in this book as well as different historical periods. Ms. Brooks made me care about all of them. Her writing drew me into each period and provided a greater understanding of each.

It's a really lovely book. I'm a big fan of Ann Patchett and it had a certain of her quality to it (not the least being the theme of strangers thrown together forge meaning). Though I was initially concerned that it might be narrowly written -- either in sexuality, gender, or ethnically -- it's none of those things. It's a lovely tapestry of diverse perspectives and circumstances that is crisply told. It took a little bit to gain momentum, but then couldn't put it down. A real joy.

In a sea of summer reads, this book was standout for me, both unique and very well-written. It follows the lives of several characters and feels very important and timely in our current climate, following the lives of several characters who are immigrants to America.Highly recommend!

Just when this reader had certain assumptions, he suddenly found himself in a very familiar, to him, Greenwich Village, and things turned around to unexpected places.

I do not see any need to offer yet another rehash of the plot summary. So I will get right to it and say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and did not want to put it down! The characters were interesting and likable. Although they were all flawed to some degree or other, their inadequacies and problems felt real. In the end the characters were all better versions of themselves, in spite of their challenges. The plot was well developed with compelling twists and no loose ends at the conclusion. I purchased this book with a bit of trepidation about the vampire theme that was mentioned in some of the reviews. However, that was really a minor, but yet very relevant and interesting aspect of the story.

This richly told and carefully threaded novel revives some of the modern novel's greatest themes: alienation in the modern world, the awakening of the self (mind and body), and the desire to have a voice that matters. One chapter in particular feels as though Satyal somehow managed to take The Rainbow and Their Eyes Were Watching God and distill them down to twenty pages of luminous prose about a young Indian woman. Full of heart and humor, and offering a window into the gregarious Indian immigrant lifeworld of the American midwest, this novel makes you root for the characters while learning a thing or two from their style and fortitude.

I had high hopes for Satyal's follow up to the delightful coming-of-age novel, Blue Boy, and it does not disappoint. No One Can Pronounce My Name is a masterful second novel, rich in its array of wonderfully idiosyncratic characters and universal themes of loneliness, cultural identity, and acceptance of our true selves. It gives a loving, lighthearted insight into an immigrant community often overlooked in literary fiction. It's a highly entertaining read, and in such a politically charged time, also a very important one.

A wonderful read full of deeply interesting, well-developed characters. While a story about immigrants, nearly everyone can relate to the narrative which explores the very human experiences of not belonging, self-doubt, love, and, ultimately, self-discovery. An intergenerational cast of unique and entertaining characters makes the novel feel fresh- filled with exotic language, tastes, and sensations. I enjoyed every page.
