Processed food is fake food, toxic food. That is what you'll learn from Joanna Blythman's excellent book.Being a Chemical Engineer myself, I avoid fake food for all the unnatural stuff it is made of.It is better to learn how to cook!Bernardo MenchacaMexico
If you have wondered what is in the food we eat... "Swallow This" explains it in copious detail that is both technical and readable all at the same time. For years I suspected that basically all the food we eat is "fixed up" in ways that would gross most of us out! Little did I know it was this bad. Ms Blythman is a master detective at uncovering food secrets that are shocking and disgusting. Consider the Chapter titles in Part 2 are: Characteristics of processed foods, Sweet, Oily, Flavored, Colored, Watery, Starchy, Tricky, Old and Packed.Even if you scrupulously read your Food Labels… “It is hard to avoid the 6,000 food additives - flavorings, glazing agents, improvers, anti-caking agents, solvents, preservatives, colourings, acids, emulsifiers, releasing agents, antioxidants, thickeners, bleaching agents, sweetness, chelators - and the undisclosed ‘processing aids’ that are routinely behind the scenes of contemporary food manufacturing.†(pg 3).Thus, “consider the real possibility that by activating, blocking, hijacking or otherwise messing with the normal functioning of our bodies, engineered chemicals are contributing to a wide range of human health problems†(pg 252).Finally, after reading the book I went grocery shopping and had a new set of eyes for the food I eat... or pass on.
An excellent book covering the new generation legal minefield of the future, with chemicals and processes which might in time prove hazardous to humankind by shortening lifespans by exposing people to insidious terminal illness. This book is a must read.
I've written books on food additives and ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products and no matter how much research I did, I was never able to find out what really went on behind the scenes. Joanna Blythman does an excellent job of sharing her findings from when she was able get inside the highly protected processed food industry. If you really care about what you put inside your body, reading labels is not enough, though it is essential and a good place to start. You need to read this book to see how much of what goes into your processed food is not listed on the label and may very well be harmful to your health. I highly recommend this book.
As someone who cooks 6x a week breakfast lunch and dinner at home, from scratch, I thought I was avoiding processed foods. What an eye opener! Salads, fruits, cheese, meat (organic, grassfed) all are 'processed' in one way or another. I loved learning how "rosemary extract" is clean lable terminology for synthetic preservatives. I checked my fridge and my butter has guar gum (wtf?). And my cooking oils? Processed with hexane...To me this is a book every person should read. Then we should all vote, as informed consumers, with our money.Unless you have a farm, grow your own vegetables and kill your own chickens, in that case you're good.
This book will make you sick before it helps to make you better. Not for the squeamish, it tells you the really dark side of food and whatcompanies do to it. There will be a place for these people to go to someday. I wish it was sooner, not later. If you're sensitive to ink this may bother you. I had to put gloves on and read it outside.
Very interesting information, after reading it I am avoiding processed foods. I knew it was bad, but it is worst. It is hard to believe the our governments allow the slow poisoning of the population, all done for money. The only drawback is that the book portrays the industry in the UK and I live in the US.
A great look at the inside of processed food. I can't believe anyone would even want to eat food like that after knowing what's in them. This book is definitely worth the read. You need to know what choices are available and make them for yourself. I enjoyed reading this book a lot and I'd recommend it to anyone who has a desire to know what's really going on in the processed food industry.
