This book is a loving tribute to the restaurants of Sacramento's past. Until fairly recently, it was fashionable to say that, in comparison to the Bay Area and North Coast, Sacramento did not have a restaurant scene. Those of us who were longtime residents knew better. Restaurant cooking reflected the community's diverse population and was more agricultural than fancy, what's called today "farm to fork." These establishments were greatly enjoyed by those who patronized them. Many thanks to the Burns for this beautifully researched book.
...had hoped for many more recipes, but the notes about some of the restaurants were wonderful. I'm living over 2,000 miles away from Sacramento, but a quick review of the book took me back--if only for a few minutes. Especially memorable was the reference to Aldo's--the epitome of class and elegance--and how everything that the owner, Aldo, did was perfectly exquisite. His wife was my real-estate agent who once gave me a gift certificate to his restaurant...I saved it for a special occasion and enjoyed it with my intended...who has been my husband for 24 years :).
I grew up in Sacramento and dined at many of the restaurants mentioned in this book. My nieces who are interested in their mother's past and mine, loved this book so much that I had to order 2 more copies. Now I will need to order one more so that I can keep a copy also. I remember going to different places with my family and special occasions like my sister's 16th birthday at the Del Prado and my 16th at the Coral Reef. The recipes are an added bonus.
Couldn't wait to open this book and was not disappointed.. Live 20 miles from Sacramento so enjoyed my memories. The Milk Farm is in the town I've lived for sixth years and The Nut Tree has been part of my life for 75 years.Wished they both had never closed. Ruth Nixon
Special Places to Eat are not just restaurants there a second home, It is sad these places don't last forever, but when you hear the name of a restaurant you remember a special event or memory that was special just shines again and maybe the building is gonebut the vision is still there, This book will take you back and more
A cool collection of Sacramento history, with stories of old restaurants and their recipes. If you have any connection to Sacramento at all, you will probably like this book.
gave to native son & he loved it
I got this as a gift for my friend that is also an ex Sacramento person and she LOVES it. It doesn't matter that it doesn't have many recipes in it. The stories are delightful and made us both miss Sacramento.
