Every now and then, a book surprises me with how much I enjoy it. True to You is one such book. I was skeptical about it because I'd read another Becky Wade novel that was awful; the characters were flat and the story was told, not shown. However, something about True to You called to me. I'm glad I listened.I'm going to do this review in reverse and get the negative stuff out of the way. Becky falls back on telling rather than showing semi-frequently, especially when describing John and Nora. These two are such great characters that I wanted to see them develop in front of me, not be told who they were. She also repeats certain information, such as how Nora feels about someone or something, or why John loves the water, or how uncertain they feel about each other. Again, show me--and don't keep telling me over and over. I'm not a goldfish. That said, Nora and John are wonderful people. After this book, they feel like my friends, especially Nora. Like her, I'm a bookworm. I use words most people don't. When I'm hurt or confused, I pop in a favorite TV show on DVD and eat ice cream. But I enjoyed Nora for other reasons as well. Despite all the telling in this book, she does grow and change. She wants to love and be loved, but understandably thinks it's not possible. It would be easy for her to stay in her own little world, but she ventures out, showing compassion toward and interest in others. I loved her interactions with library patron Randall, and applauded her for her attitude toward the ever-negative, ever-critical Grandma Bradford.John--well, I understand exactly why Nora fell for him, and I'm not just talking about his Navy SEAL training. John Lawson is a rare find in fiction, an alpha male with vulnerabilities. I love that Becky chose to make him an adoptee searching for his birth mother; usually, the female lead would be on that sort of quest. I also appreciated the other struggles she gave John, such as his diagnosis, and how she let him realistically work through those, with and without Nora at his side.Becky's secondary characters were a joy to read about, especially Britt and Willow. I'm looking forward to their books next, although I hope there are some plot twists to keep me guessing, as there were in True to You. Some of John and Nora's revelations could have felt contrived, but because of who they are and how the story was set up, everything worked well. There is at least one big plot twist and a couple small others, all of which are believable. As noted, I wish Becky's writing were tighter. I also wonder why she included certain subplots; why tell us about Willow and Corbin now? Why not leave it for the next novel? Overall, I'm glad I took a chance. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and may delve into Becky's other offerings, too.

Genealogist Nora Bradford spends her days at the historic village that she owns, looking into the pasts of others and trying to put her own behind her. With she crosses paths with former Navy Seal and medal of honor recipient John Lawson, she offers her services on a whim and to her surprise, he gives her a call. It turns out John has discovered an inherited condition that forces him to dig into his past as an adopted child to find answers. These two couldn't be more opposite, but the more time they spend together, the more they seem to fit somehow. But John's already dating someone else and Nora has scars of her own to overcome. Will their faith be strong enough to see them through the whatever lies before them both?I absolutely sunk into this novel. The writing was enthralling, it was easy to get lost in the fictional world of Nora and John. I hated every moment I had to look away from the story!Becky Wade is a genius at characterization. I felt like I knew Nora. I could see how she dressed and understood why. I got to know her sisters, Willow and Britt - and enough crumbs were dropped about them that I cannot wait to read their stories! I also think this author is so good at writing men who don't sound like a woman's idea of what a man sounds like. John's point of view sounded like a man, a man who was struggling and trying to problem solve, but still a man. All of the characters had depth. They were people who I could see hanging out with or being friends with.Spiritually, there was a wonderful message in this book about trusting God when you can't see what He's doing. The message flowed naturally out of the characters themselves, so it didn't feel forced or preachy. The story itself dealt with deep, and at times heart-breaking, issues but everything was handled gracefully, with several moments that had me smiling, others tearing up, and one that took me by complete surprise. This is the kind of book you hate to close. It's one of those rare stories that manages to combine charm and poignancy in perfect measure. It's sweet and romantic, but with serious depth. Another winner for Becky Wade!

This book is amazing! Nora is one of the most multi-faceted female characters I've read in a while. The story is so full of emotion, evidenced by the tears I had at the end. Filled with layers of depth - family relationships, past history, loss, love and most importantly faith and the importance of trusting God above all things. One quote that really got me was "There's evil in the world, but in the end, God assures us that the light will win out over the darkness. Justice will be His." Nora and John's story will make you really think about your own circumstances and how to give everything over to God, good and bad; even as hard as it may seem to give up control to Him. I can't wait for the next Bradford sister story and to catch up with Nora and John.
